One Metro Detroit city has banned carnivals.

The Berkley City Council this week passed a resolution to temporarily ban carnivals following two straight years of fights at their annual “Berkley Days” event. Mayor Bridget Dean says the festival’s committee and public safety officials are working to figure out what the festival will be next year:

When we first started this 90 plus years ago, it was a parade, and the parade was because it was the first paved road,” Dean said. “To celebrate that, the community put on a parade. And so Berkley Days has grown over the years and it’s changed because that’s life, right? That happens. The needs of a community change. You always want to make your event the best that it can be.”

The council also proposed rewriting the city’s zoning laws to limit gun businesses from opening downtown and at least 1,000 feet away from schools.

Dean says they haven’t decided what will replace the fair, but asks the community to provide input.
