Berrien County Commissioners to discuss meeting frequency

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners is reconsidering its meeting schedule.

Commissioner Bob Harrison of the county personnel committee tells us the body is studying its options after hearing complaints the board’s heavy meeting schedule keeps potential candidates away.

Representatives or individuals involved in both the Republican and Democrat parties have complained to me personally that they have trouble locating people willing to run for the county board because of the weekly schedule and that their concern is that this eliminates the number of people from being able to do that,” Harrison said.

The county board meets on the first four Thursdays of each month. Harrison says Berrien County is the only one of Michigan’s 83 counties with a commission that meets weekly. Not only does that make it difficult for people who work full-time to serve, but it also puts a burden on the staff who have to prepare for each meeting.

Commissioners will fill out surveys to gauge their thoughts following a discussion Thursday and then the committee will come back with a recommendation.
