Buccaneers 20, Lions 16 – Mayfield Lifts Bucs to 20-16 win over Lions
Baker Mayfield had an 11-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Detroit Lions 20-16 in a playoff rematch. Tampa Bay fell behind only once in the closely contested game, and it stopped Detroit when it had two chances to drive for a go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes. The Lions turned it over on downs at the Bucs 6 with 53 seconds left and again at their 26 with 2 seconds left.  Lions coach Dan Campbell lamented a mistake he made in the first half, causing confusion for his offense and special teams that had both units on the field. That drew a flag that ran off the clock and took away an opportunity to kick a short field goal and pull within four points.  Detroit QB Jared Goff threw two interceptions and got a break when defenders dropped two other passes that could have been picked off. Goff finished 34 of 55 for 307 yards, and the offense he leads was 1 of 7 in the red zone.  Detroit’s Aidan Hutchinson had three sacks in the first quarter and finished with a career-high 4 1/2 sacks.

Packers 16, Colts 10 – Willis thrives with help from the Packers’ D and running game in a 16-10 win over Colts
Malik Willis threw his first career touchdown pass, Josh Jacobs had 151 of Green Bay’s 261 yards rushing and the Packers withstood the absence of injured quarterback Jordan Love to beat the Indianapolis Colts 16-10. Green Bay’s Evan Williams recovered an onside kick and intercepted a Hail Mary pass to clinch the victory. The Packers intercepted 4 of Anthony Richardson’s passes.

Texans 19, Bears 13 – Stroud throws a TD pass and Fairbairn kicks 4 field goals to help the Texans top Bears 19-13
C.J. Stroud threw for 260 yards and a touchdown and Ka′imi Fairbairn kicked four field goals to help the Houston Texans top the Chicago Bears 19-13. Fairbairn connected from 56, 47, 59 and 53 yards, and Houston’s defense put heavy pressure on Caleb Williams for much of the game. Stroud’s 28-yard scoring pass to Nico Collins put Houston up 10-3 early in the second quarter, and the Texans led 16-10 at halftime. Houston had trouble moving the ball in the second half, but its defense intercepted Williams twice to secure the victory. Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, was 23 of 37 for 174 yards. He was sacked seven times.

NFL – Campbell takes blame for clock-management disaster as Lions lose to Buccaneers
Dan Campbell has never been the kind of coach who points fingers at his staff or players. So he took full responsibility for a second-quarter disaster that cost the Lions in a 20-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With Detroit on the Tampa Bay 6 and the clock running at the end of the first half, a miscommunication led to the field-goal team coming onto the field as the offense was trying to spike the ball. The resulting penalty and clock runoff ended the half.

NFL – Williams struggles in second NFL game as Bears fall to Texans
Caleb Williams and Chicago’s offense was bailed out by defense and special-teams scoring to get a win over Tennessee in their opener last week. The No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft wasn’t as fortunate Sunday night against the Houston Texans. Williams was 23 of 37 for 174 yards with two interceptions in a 19-13 loss. He was sacked seven times.

NFL – Tua Tagovailoa will see a neurologist this week after suffering another concussion
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will see a neurologist this week after suffering his fourth diagnosed concussion in five years and his third while in the NFL, according to a person familiar with his plans. Tagovailoa is focused on getting better and gathering information and isn’t thinking about retiring, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity for privacy reasons. Tagovailoa was injured on a scramble when he lowered his head and collided into Bills safety Damar Hamlin during Miami’s 31-10 loss to Buffalo on Thursday night. While former players and even current Raiders coach Antonio Pierce have said Tagovailoa should retire, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel has emphasized the importance of not offering his opinion.

Tigers 4, Orioles 2 – Riley Greene homers twice and surging Tigers top struggling Orioles 4-2
Riley Greene homered twice and drove in three runs, and the Detroit Tigers beat Baltimore 4-2 to take two of three from the Orioles. Greene hit a two-run homer with two outs in the third off Cade Povich and a solo drive in the eighth against Gregory Soto. Greene leads the Tigers with 23 homers. Detroit has won six of eight. Baltimore dropped its second straight series and scored just six runs in the three games.

White Sox 4, A’s 3 – White Sox win back-to-back games for first time in nearly 3 months, beat Athletics 4-3
The White Sox won back-to-back games for the first time in nearly three months, beating the Oakland Athletics 4-3 behind home runs from Gavin Sheets and Bryan Ramos to end a streak of 20 consecutive series losses. A day after scoring in the ninth to win 7-6 and stop a 16-game home losing streak, the White Sox took a 3-0 first-inning lead and strung together wins for the first time since three in a row against Atlanta and Colorado from June 27-29. Chicago is 35-115 with 12 games left and is trying to avoid the post-1900 record of 120 losses by the 1962 expansion New York Mets.

Cubs 6, Rockies 2 – Busch homers twice and has 3 RBIs to lead Cubs over Rockies 6-2
Michael Busch had his first big league multi-homer game, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 6-2 to stop a three-game losing streak. Busch had a go-ahead RBI single in the third, then hit solo homers in the seventh inning off Jake Bird and the ninth against Justin Lawrence, increasing his season total to 20. Kyle Hendricks allowed one run and two hits in six innings with seven strikeouts. Chicago went 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 16 runners. Colorado pitchers walked 12 for the first time since 1999.

NCAAFB –Longhorns take over at No. 1 for first time in 16 years
Texas is No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time in 16 years, replacing Georgia after the Bulldogs struggled to remain unbeaten against Kentucky. The Longhorns moved up a spot from No. 2 and received 35 first-place votes and 1,540 points. The Bulldogs, who have been No. 1 since the preseason poll, received 23 first-place votes and 1,518 points. Ohio State received five first-place votes and stayed at No. 3. No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Mississippi held their places and Tennessee moved up a spot to No. 6, flip-flopping with Southeastern Conference rival Missouri.

CFP – Texas also leads CFP rankings
The projected College Football Playoff field has a new top seed. Using The Associated Press college football poll to fill out a 12-team bracket, Texas now holds the No. 1 seed after taking the top spot in the rankings Sunday. Ohio State is still the projected No. 2 seed as the Big Ten champ, with Miami as the third seed as Atlantic Coast Conference champ and Utah of the Big 12 at the fourth seed. There was little other significant movement in the projections with the same 12 teams in the field this week as last.

Caitlin Clark scored a career-high 35 points with eight assists, Kelsey Mitchell added 30 points and the duo combined to hit 12 of Indiana’s 16 3-pointers to help the Fever beat the Dallas Wings 110-109. Clark, whose 329 assists are a single-season WNBA record, has a rookie-record 761 points this season, breaking the mark of 744 set by Seimone Augustus in 2006. Indiana clinched the No. 6 seed in the playoffs and will play the third-seeded Connecticut Sun in the first round. Indiana tied its franchise record for single-game scoring and tied its season high for made 3s. Arike Ogunbowale and Satou Sabally scored 27 points apiece for the Wings and Natasha Howard added 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Mercury 93, Sky 88 – Griner, Taurasi deliver in clutch and Mercury defeat Sky 93-88
Brittney Griner scored 26 points, Diana Taurasi added 25 and the Phoenix Mercury held off the Chicago Sky 93-88. The loss, Chicago’s eighth in the last 10 games, leaves the Sky in a tie with Washington and Atlanta in the battle for the league’s eighth playoff spot. Chicago plays at Atlanta on Tuesday with the winner having the upper hand for the final playoff spot. Washington hosts league-leading New York on Tuesday. Chennedy Carter had 20 points, Michaela Onyenwere 18, Banham 17, Dana Evans 13 and Isabelle Harrison 10 for Chicago. Onyenwere added nine rebounds.

Golf – LIV –Rahm holds on to win LIV Golf; captures season points list for $18M bonus
Jon Rahm earned quite the payday on Sunday. He won LIV Golf Chicago by three shots for the $4 million prize. And the victory gave him the season points title and an $18 million bonus. Rahm played bogey-free on the weekend at Bolingbrook Golf Course to win by three shots over Joaquin Niemann and Sergio Garcia. He was never seriously challenged. But he missed a pair of short birdie putts down the stretch that kept Niemann in the hunt for the season title. Rahm made a 12-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that all but locked up two titles.
