Rockies 4, Tigers 2 – Jacob Stallings’ RBI double in the ninth helps Rockies beat Tigers 4-2
Jacob Stallings’ RBI double in the ninth inning helped the Colorado Rockies beat the Detroit Tigers 4-2. The Tigers began Thursday three games behind the Minnesota Twins for the third American League wild-card spot and Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal on the mound. With the score tied at 2, Brendan Rodgers led off the ninth with a single off Jason Foley and took second on a passed ball. Stallings hit a flare into right field that got past Matt Vierling, allowing Stallings to take second. Pinch-runner Nolan Jones moved to third on a groundout and Jake Cave made it 4-2 with a long sacrifice fly.

Bills 31, Dolphins 10 – Cook scores 3 TDs to help Bills rout Dolphins 31-10, Tagovailoa leaves with concussion
James Cook caught a touchdown pass and ran for two scores and the Buffalo Bills routed Miami 31-10 on Thursday night, with Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa leaving early because of a concussion. Tagovailoa left in the third quarter after colliding with defensive back Damar Hamlin and hitting the back of his head against the turf. Tagovailoa was quickly ruled out with the concussion, casting doubt on his season after a history of dealing with head injuries. Josh Allen, playing with a glove on his left non-throwing hand after hurting it in Buffalo’s opener, completed 13 of 19 passes for 139 yards. He’s 12-2 against the Dolphins and the Bills are 14-2 against Miami since coach Sean McDermott’s first year as head coach in 2017.

NFL – Hall of Famer Joe Schmidt, who helped Detroit Lions win 2 NFL titles, dies at 92
Joe Schmidt, the Hall of Fame linebacker who helped the Detroit Lions win NFL championships in 1953 and 1957 and later coached the team, has died. He was 92. The Lions said family informed the team Schmidt died Wednesday. A cause of death was not provided. One of pro football’s first great middle linebackers, Schmidt played his entire NFL career with the Lions from 1953-65. An eight-time All-Pro, he was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1973 and the college football version in 2000. Born in Pittsburgh, Schmidt played college football in his hometown at Pitt.

NFL – Lions host Bucs in another playoff rematch from last postseason
The Detroit Lions are the fourth team in NFL history to open a year with two straight playoff rematches. And they’ll be hoping to end the season just as the other three teams did — by winning a league championship. The Lions will play Tampa Bay on Sunday at home, a week after hosting the Los Angeles Rams. The 2007 New England Patriots, 1984 San Francisco 49ers and 1966 Green Bay Packers won NFL titles after starting seasons with two consecutive games against postseason opponents from the previous year.

NFL – Texans look to build on strong offensive performance against Bears
The Houston Texans had the most yards rushing in the NFL with 213 in a Week 1 win over Indianapolis and their 417 total yards ranked second. Not bad, the Texans say, but they’re certain they can do much more as they prepare for this week’s "Sunday Night Football" matchup with the Chicago Bears. Running back Joe Mixon says “I feel like we’ve got a lot of room to grow as an offense." For the Bears, No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams completed just 14 of 29 passes for 93 yards against the Titans but Chicago rallied from a 17-point deficit for a win.

NCAAFB – More coaches believe targeting shouldn’t result in ejection
Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell says he doesn’t believe targeting penalties should result in automatic ejections. Plenty of other coaches agree. But the policy doesn’t appear likely to go away anytime soon. NCAA national coordinator of officials Steve Shaw says the threat of ejection has been an effective deterrent. There were 0.16 targeting penalties enforced per game last season. That represented a three-year low. There have been 37 targeting penalties enforced through this season’s first 178 Football Bowl Subdivision games for an average of 0.21 per game.

WNBA – A’ja Wilson’s single-season WNBA scoring mark likely short-lived
A’ja Wilson now owns the single-season scoring record but is unlikely it will stand very long. Wilson has been scoring a record pace all season long and on Wednesday night she broke the year-old record of 939 held by Jewell Loyd. But four of the top five all-time single-season scoring marks have come in the last two years, including Loyd’s. Part of the reason is the league has several explosive offensive players and the WNBA continues to expand its schedule. When WNBA was launched in 1997, each team played 28 games. From 2003-19, teams played 34 games and last season each played 40 games. Next year, each will play 44 games. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Wilson, Loyd or someone else top the number of points the Aces’ star finishes with this year.

NCAAWBB – Canadian hoop star Natalie Achonwa heads to Michigan as a coach
Canadian basketball star Natalie Achonwa is taking the next step in her hoop career. The four-time Olympian was named the assistant coach of player development for Michigan’s women’s basketball team. Achonwa said that while she will miss being a player, she’s ready to go in a new direction. The Paris Games were the 31-year-old Achonwa’s fourth Olympics, the most by a Canadian player. She played in 79 career games for Canada’s national squad, joining the team when she was 16. After being drafted ninth overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2014 WNBA Draft out of Notre Dame, Achonwa played nine seasons in the WNBA and six overseas. She played with the Fever from 2015-20, before joining the Minnesota Lynx in 2021.

Golf – David Lipsky shoots 65 to take 1st-round lead at Silverado in FedEx Cup Fall opener
David Lipsky shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday at Silverado Country Club to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Procore Championship. Winless in 104 events since joining the PGA Tour in 2022, Lipsky went out with the early groups and had eight birdies with one bogey to kick off the FedEx Cup Fall series at the picturesque course in the heart of Napa Valley wine country. Patton Kizzire and Mark Hubbard were a stroke back. Kizzire started on the back nine and made a late run with three consecutive birdies to move into a tie for first. A bogey on No. 8 dropped him back.
