Electric vehicle sales are sluggish in countries throughout the world, including the United States. While there have been increases year over year, EVs still account for only 8% of all auto sales.

Paul Spadafora, the director of professional engineering programs at the University of Detroit Mercy, says there are several reasons for slow EV sales.

Potential buyers remain cautious due to several factors, including the high list price of electric vehicles, uncertainty about residual values, driving range anxiety, and the inadequacy of charging infrastructure compared to current presence of gas stations,” Spadafora said.

Spadafora expects over time, and with mandates from governments, EV adoption will overcome those hurdles.
