Benton Harbor Area Schools Superintendent Kelvin Butts says all Benton Harbor Area Schools will be closed on Friday after events at the high school on Thursday that led to an early dismissal.

The districtwide closing has been announced to give the schools and police time to investigate Thursday’s situation and to allow for the implementation of measures to prevent future disruptions caused by heightened tensions in the community.

According to police, there was a large physical altercation and multiple disturbances that led to several responding units to the school on Thursday. The high school school was placed on a hard lockdown and students were then dismissed.

Officials say there was only fights, and the threats that were made were just hearsay with nothing substantiated. Police are now investigating.

Superintendent Butts said in a statement, “The safety of our students is our utmost priority.”
