Tigers 11, Rockies 0 – Rookie Keider Montero throws Tigers’ first shutout in 3 seasons in 11-0 rout of Rockies
Rookie Keider Montero pitched Detroit’s first individual shutout in three seasons and the Tigers beat the Colorado Rockies 11-0. Montero (5-6) was making his 14th major league start and became the first Tigers pitcher with nine shutout innings since Spencer Turnbull’s no-hitter in Seattle on May 18, 2021. The 24-year-old right-hander needed 96 pitchers while facing the minimum 27 batters. He allowed three singles and struck out five without walking a batter. Parker Meadows hit a solo homer in the first inning, his seventh, and drove in three runs. The Tigers loaded the bases in the second on two walks and an error, and Riley Greene tripled into the right-field corner to make it 4-0. Matt Vierling followed with an RBI single to put Detroit up by five.
Meadows had a two-run single off Anthony Molina in the sixth, making it 7-0, and he scored the eighth run on Vierling’s sacrifice fly. Andy Ibáñez had a two-run single later in what became a six-run inning for the Tigers.

Guardians 5, White Sox 0 – Thomas hits a 3-run homer in 5-0 Guardians win, dealing White Sox 113th loss
Lane Thomas hit a three-run homer and Cleveland’s bullpen was terrific once again, helping the Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 5-0 after Ben Lively departed with a leg injury. Thomas also doubled and scored on Kyle Manzardo’s single in the second inning. With two on and one out in the sixth, he drove Gus Varland’s second pitch deep to left-center for his third homer since he was acquired in a July 29 trade with Washington. Six Cleveland relievers combined for seven innings of four-hit ball after Lively departed with a right thigh contusion.

Cubs 6, Dodgers 3 -Cubs beat Dodgers 6-3 in Yamamoto-Imanaga matchup as LA makes 3 errors in 5-run 8th inning
The Cubs rallied for the tying and go-ahead runs in a five-run eighth inning, when the Los Angeles Dodgers committed three errors in a 6-3 loss to Chicago that featured a matchup of Japanese star pitchers Yoshinobu Yamamoto ad Shota Imanaga. The NL West-leading Dodgers blew a 3-1 lead and lost to the Cubs for the second straight night, assuring their first series loss since Aug. 5-7 against visiting Philadelphia. Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong robbed Max Muncy of a potential two-run homer with two outs in the ninth.

WNBA – Playoff picture still jumbled as Chicago, Atlanta, Washington vying for 8th seed
The WNBA playoff picture is still jumbled with the final postseason spot coming down to three teams — Chicago, Atlanta and Washington. All three teams will play each other at least once over the last nine days of the season. The Mystics face both the Sky and Dream this week, including a home-and-home set against Atlanta. Chicago visits Atlanta next Tuesday. The Sky have a one-game advantage over the Dream and a two-game lead over the Mystics, though they lost star rookie Angel Reese for the season with a wrist injury.

WNBA – WNBA players speak out against commissioner after failing to condemn fan racism
WNBA players and their union spoke out against Commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s recent comments on a TV show that failed to condemn racist and bitter criticism from fans toward the Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese rivalry. Engelbert made an appearance on CNBC’s “Power Lunch” on Monday and was asked by anchor Tyler Mathisen about what he called the “darker” tone taken by fan bases on social media that brings race and sometimes sexuality into the conversation.

NCAAFB – Robinson and Edwards among former Wolverines suing NCAA and BTN
Former Michigan football stars Denard Robinson and Braylon Edwards are suing the NCAA and Big Ten Network with other former Wolverines players. They claim they lost out on more than $50 million during their college careers because of the NCAA’s now-lifted ban on athletes being compensated for name, image and likeness. The federal class-action antitrust lawsuit was filed in the Eastern District of Michigan on behalf of all Michigan football players who played before 2016. The NCAA and major college conferences are in the process of trying to settle antitrust lawsuits related to athlete NIL compensation. Those damage claims go back to 2016.

NCAAFB – Plenty of former NFL coordinators have found a home as assistants in Big Ten
It turns out the revolving door sending college coaches to the NFL also works in the other direction. The Big Ten lost its most prominent head coach this offseason as Jim Harbaugh took over the Los Angeles Chargers after leading Michigan to a national title. But it also gained four former NFL coordinators with Super Bowl rings. The list includes Washington defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, UCLA offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. Jack Del Rio joined the list shortly before the season when Wisconsin hired him as a senior adviser to head coach Luke Fickell.

NFL – Dolphins react to ’emotional’ and ‘triggering’ footage of Tyreek Hill traffic stop
Tyreek Hill’s teammates and coaches used words like “triggering” and a “shame” to describe body camera footage showing a police officer yanking the Miami Dolphins receiver out of his sports car and forcing him face-first onto the ground during a traffic stop. The incident outside the Dolphins’ home stadium has drawn national attention. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa says it led to a lot of conversation in the locker room among Hill’s teammates, some of whom privately shared their own personal experiences with police.

NFL – NFL investigating sexual assault lawsuit against Browns QB Deshaun Watson,
The NFL said it is investigating the latest civil lawsuit filed against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson to determine if he violated the league’s personal conduct policy. On Monday, a woman in Texas accused Watson of sexual assault in 2020 while he played for Houston. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league is reviewing the complaint. In the lawsuit, the woman alleges Watson forced himself on her sexually during an incident at her apartment. Watson was suspended 11 games by the league in 2022 after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions. The Browns traded five draft picks for the three-time Pro Bowler in 2022.

NFL – Judge orders former NFL star Adrian Peterson to turn over assets to pay $12M debt
Former NFL running back Adrian Peterson has been ordered by a Texas judge to turn over personal assets to help pay a debt that has ballooned to more than $12 million. A court-appointed receiver has been seeking to collect money from Peterson as part of a judgment against the four-time All-Pro running back over a loan he failed to repay to a Pennsylvania lending company. On Monday a judge in Houston granted a request by the receiver for law enforcement to accompany him to Peterson’s home in suburban Houston so he can inventory assets that can be sold off. Attorneys for Peterson did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

NBA – NBA expands permissible scope of coach’s challenge on some out-of-bounds plays
The NBA has expanded the permissible scope of coach’s challenge reviews on some out-of-bounds plays, saying Tuesday that if a foul should have been called on the play it now can be assessed shortly after the fact. The league’s Board of Governors approved the move at its meeting in New York, after it was unanimously recommended by the league’s competition committee last week. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was scheduled to speak about the meeting on Tuesday.

FIFA – Mauricio Pochettino hired to succeed Gregg Berhalter as US men’s coach
Former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has been hired to succeed Gregg Berhalter as U.S. men’s national team coach, 21 months before the Americans host the 2026 World Cup. A 52-year-old Argentine, Pochettino became the 10th U.S. coach in 14 years and its first foreign-born leader since Jurgen Klinsmann from 2011-16. Pochettino has coached Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, winning a 2022 Ligue 1 title. Pochettino had been in negotiations since mid-August. Matt Crocker, the USSF’s sporting director in charge of the search, was Southampton’s academy director when Pochettino started at that club.
