Benson promotes voter pre-registration

Eight weeks out from Election Day, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson was in Metro Detroit this week talking about voter pre-registration.

Benson says ore-registration is when someone registers to vote before they’re actually allowed to vote.

The voting age hasn’t changed,” Benson said. “You still need to be 18 on election day to cast a ballot, but pre-registration eliminates that extra step for young people of having to register to vote if they already have their driver’s license or state ID. Even for those young people who aren’t quite ready to get their driver’s license at the age of 16 or 17, you can still pre-register online at Michigan.gov/Vote or at your local clerk’s office.”

Benson says Michigan led the nation in youth voter turnout in 2022, meaning voters between the age of 18 to 29 turned out to vote.

Benson this week announced the launch of a new online mock elections portal, a resource for K-12 schools, educators, and youth organizations to encourage civic engagement by hosting their own mock elections for students.
