School leaders in South Haven say everyone’s safe after Baseline Middle School was placed on lockdown Tuesday.

South Haven Public Schools says the administration received a complaint around first hour regarding a substitute teacher serving in a classroom. The complaint said the substitute had been discussing political topics with students, making them uncomfortable. The administration then interviewed other students to investigate.

At the end of third hour, the teacher was dismissed.

Before noon, the South Haven School Resource Officer was contacted by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department after it was notified of a concern from a family member of the substitute teacher. It stemmed from statements made toward that individual and their family. The family member said the substitute had just been dismissed from their position at South Haven Public Schools.

That led to the lockdown at Baseline Middle School.

South Haven Public Schools says at no time were reports given that the individual made any threatening statement toward students or the school system. The substitute was later located by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department.

The district urges any parents with questions to contact administration.
