The Michigan Department of Transportation is changing traffic patterns on US-12 and M-51 in Niles this week.

Starting Friday, September 13, MDOT will move to the next phase of the project to work on the eastbound lanes of US-12. In addition, M-51 will be open to normal traffic south of Bell Road and north of Fort Street, as MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa told us.

At M51, US-12 is getting off the ramps and getting onto US-12 proper,” Schirripa said. “Just using the westbound lanes for now, so we’re going to the eastbound side. And then M51, we’re going to have two lanes north of 4th Street and south of Bell Road.”

Construction on the M-51/US-12 intersection will continue. Reopening additional lanes will help ease traffic congestion.

Schirippa tells us if all goes to plan and weather permitting, the project should be complete mid to late October.

This work is part of the $27 million investment to rebuild the US-12/M-51 intersection, along with rebuilding 1 mile of US-12 and 2.7 miles of M-51.
