Tigers 4, Padres 3 – Meadows hits a 2-out grand slam in the 9th inning to lead the Tigers to 4-3 win over the Padres
Parker Meadows hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. Meadows’ opposite-field homer went into the second row in left field off a 100.7 mph four-seam fastball from Padres closer Robert Suarez (8-3). Tigers reliever Ricky Vanasco (1-0) won his first game of the season with a scoreless eighth. Tyler Holton earned his seventh save with a scoreless ninth. Jurickson Profar hit a solo home run for San Diego in the first inning and Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run shot in the second to give San Diego a 3-0 lead.

MLB – Anthony Rizzo set for return to Wrigley with Yankees 3 years after trade from Cubs
Anthony Rizzo doesn’t feel a sense of closure for his first trip to Wrigley Field since getting traded to the Yankees by the Cubs three years ago. New York’s first baseman isn’t sure he will ever need closure in Chicago after helping the Cubs win their first World Series title in 108 years in 2016. Rizzo says the “door will always be open in Chicago” because of his love and respect for the franchise and its fan base. The 35-year-old also feels at home in New York. He says the trade to the Yankees was a good reset for his career.

Last Night
Kansas City Chiefs 27, Baltimore Ravens 20

Chiefs 27, Ravens 20 – Chiefs hold off Ravens 27-20 when review overturns TD on final play of NFL’s season opener
Patrick Mahomes threw for 291 yards and a touchdown, and the Kansas City defense kept Lamar Jackson and the Ravens out of the end zone on three consecutive plays in the closing seconds. That allowed the Chiefs to begin their pursuit of a third straight Super Bowl title with a 27-20 victory over Baltimore on Thursday night. The game ended with a video review after Jackson appeared to hit Isaiah Likely in the back of the end zone with no time left for a touchdown. The video clearly showed Likely’s toe on the line, though, and the call was overturned and the pass ruled incomplete.

NFL – Lions kick off season against Matthew Stafford-led Rams in wild-card game rematch
The Detroit Lions are kicking off the season against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night, a rematch of an NFC wild-card game. Detroit beat Los Angeles 24-23 on Jan. 14 at home for its first postseason victory in 32 years. Matthew Stafford played at Ford Field for the first time since Detroit traded him to Los Angeles for Jared Goff and first-round picks, and was booed throughout the game. Rams receiver Puka Nacua and Lions receiver Jameson Williams will be players to watch in Week 1. The Lions are 5-2 against Rams when opening the season against each other.

NFL – Top pick Caleb Williams makes his debut as Bears host Titans in opener
All eyes will be on quarterback Caleb Williams when the No. 1 pick debuts for the Chicago Bears in the season opener against the Tennessee Titans. The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner from Southern California is widely viewed as a generational talent. Williams threw for 93 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions in one season at Oklahoma and two at USC. Chicago is counting on him to become the sort of quarterback the city has craved for generations. Tennessee quarterback Will Levis has a brand-new offense with first-year coach Brian Callahan. The front office spent lots of money to surround him with help in wide receivers Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd and by bolstering the offensive line, signing center Lloyd Cushenberry and drafting left tackle JC Latham.

NCAAFB – Big game at the Big House as No. 4 Texas visits No. 10 Michigan
Michigan’s Davis Warren may not have the credentials of Texas quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning. Warren’s story is tough to top. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2019, when he attended Loyola High School in Los Angeles. Davis dropped about 40 pounds and lost his hair, undergoing chemotherapy that left marks on the inside of his left biceps that serve as reminders for his cancer that went into remission. Davis will make his second career start for the 10th-ranked Wolverine against the third-ranked Longhorns on Saturday at Michigan Stadium in the first regular season matchup of the storied programs.

NCAAFB – MSU takes on Maryland in first Big Ten game for new coach Jonathan Smith
Michigan State takes on Maryland this weekend in first Big Ten conference game for new coach Jonathan Smith. The Spartans will try to show more offensively than they did in a 16-10 win over Florida Atlantic last week. Maryland looked plenty sharp in its 50-7 win over UConn, but the Terrapins have to show they can take care of business at home as a significant favorite. This is the first conference game for any Big Ten teams this season and the earliest conference matchup for Maryland since 2011, when it was in the ACC

NCAAFB – Notre Dame looking to maintain focus against Northern Illinois in home opener
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman received a reminder from his old college coach earlier this week. Jim Tressel reminded Freeman not to become complacent after a signature win. So Freeman is reminding his fifth-ranked Fighting Irish to maintain their focus when they host Northern Illinois in Saturday’s home opener. Both teams are 1-0. While the Irish handed then No. 20 Texas A&M a 23-13 loss, the Huskies walloped Western 54-15. And now Northern Illinois is trying to collect what would likely be the biggest win in program history.

Tennis – Jessica Pegula reaches her first Grand Slam final and will play Aryna Sabalenka
Jessica Pegula has shrugged off a sluggish start and come back from a set and a break down at the U.S. Open to defeat Karolina Muchova 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 for a berth in her first Grand Slam final. The No. 6-seeded Pegula won for the 15th time in her past 16 matches Thursday night. She will meet No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka for the title on Saturday. Sabalenka reached her second consecutive U.S. Open final by beating Emma Navarro 6-3, 7-6 (2) with her usual brand of high-risk, high-reward tennis. The No. 2-seeded Sabalenka is a 26-year-old from Belarus who won each of the past two Australian Opens.

Tennis – The spray that caused Jannik Sinner’s failed drug tests has ‘DOPING’ warning
The word “DOPING” is printed in all caps inside a red circle with a slash through it on the box containing the over-the-counter spray sold in Italy that caused No. 1-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner to fail two drug tests in March. He was exonerated in the case and will play in the U.S. Open semifinals Friday. Trofodermin contains the anabolic steroid Clostebol and is available without a prescription in Sinner’s home country. The product is meant for treating cuts and scrapes. It contains an underlined doping warning on the medication guide that comes inside the box. A small spray can of Trofodermin was purchased for $16 at a Rome pharmacy by an Associated Press reporter.
