The Michigan State Police Office of School Safety is launching new resources to help the state’s K-12 schools develop or update their emergency operations plans.

Office of School Safety manager Kim Root says state police are offering free resources for schools to use. She hopes school leaders will take advantage of them.

There are a range of emergencies that can happen in schools, anything from weather emergencies to a water main break or a gas leak,” Root said. “So, the Emergency Operations Plan suite of resources is intended to help schools plan for a range of emergencies.”

Root said a key competent of this updated Emergency Operations Plan program is recovery for schools after something does happen. To help with this, the OSS has partnered with national non-profit “I Love U Guys Foundation” to use the MSP’s standard Response Protocol and Standard Reunification method.

A lot has evolved over the last 10 years in terms of school safety and emergency operations. So it was time to update those resources, and then the availability of the federal funding allowed us to bring this suite of resources forward.”

School administrators can find the all available resources on the OSS website. You can learn more right here.
