Tigers 3, Angels 2 – Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter lead the Tigers to 6th straight win, 3-2 over Angels
Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Kerry Carpenter added an RBI single in the third as the Detroit Tigers extended their winning streak to six games with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The teams were forced to wait out a lengthy rain delay at the outset for the second straight night. This time, after a delay of 1 hour, 50 minutes, first pitch took place at 8:30 p.m. The Tigers moved two games over .500 at 68-66 for the first time since May 7, when they were 19-17. L.A. (54-79) lost its fifth straight game and has dropped 13 of 15.

Rangers 3/4 White Sox 1/3 – Jankowski saves Rangers with HR robbery as Texas takes 2 from White Sox
Travis Jankowski robbed Andrew Vaughn of a game-winning homer in the ninth inning, and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 for their second victory of the day against the majors’ worst team. Corey Seager had four hits, including a tiebreaking single in the ninth, as Texas improved to 6-0 against Chicago this season. Seager also had an RBI single as the Rangers beat the White Sox 3-1 hours earlier in the resumption of a game suspended Tuesday after just four pitches. The White Sox have lost six straight and 10 of 11 overall, falling to 31-103. They are 4-32 since the All-Star break.

Cubs 14, Pirates 10 – Christian Bethancourt drives in 7 as Chicago Cubs rally past Pirates for 14-10 victory
Christian Bethancourt drove in seven runs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the ninth, as the Chicago Cubs rallied past the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-10. The Cubs trailed by seven through six innings before taking advantage of another shaky performance by Pittsburgh’s bullpen to complete the three-game sweep. Bethancourt hit a two-run homer in the seventh to start the rally. The catcher added a two-run double in the eighth and laced a sharp bases-loaded single to left against Pirates closer David Bednar to finish the comeback. Pirates rookie ace Paul Skenes struck out six in five innings and was in line for his ninth victory before the Cubs rallied.

Fever 84, Sun 80 – Caitlin Clark sets WNBA rookie record for 3s as Fever beat Sun and snap 11-game skid in series
Kelsey Mitchell scored 23 points, Caitlin Clark had 19 points, five rebounds and five assists, and the Indiana Fever beat the Connecticut Sun 84-80 to snap an 11-game losing streak in the series. It was Indiana’s first win against Connecticut since July 3, 2021. Clark set a WNBA rookie record for made 3-pointers, passing Rhyne Howard’s 85 in 2022, with a triple in the first quarter. Clark added two more 3-pointers before finishing 3 of 12, giving her 88 on the season.

Mystics 74, Sky 70 – Stefanie Dolson scores 17, Ariel Atkins adds 15 to help Mystics beat Sky 74-70
Stefanie Dolson scored 17 points and Ariel Atkins added 15 points and five assists to help the Washington Mystics beat the Chicago Sky 74-70 on Wednesday night. Washington has won three consecutive games for the first time this season. That winning streak comes on the heels of a five-game skid. The Sky had a 68-61 lead with 4:38 to play, but the Mystics rallied and closed the game on a 13-2 run to clinch their first three-game winning streak since last June.

NFL – The NFC North has become a daunting division
The NFC North had 38 combined wins including the playoffs last season for the second most in the league. The group ought to have as good of an opportunity as any of the NFL’s eight quartets to stake that claim as the league’s best in 2024. The defending division champion Detroit Lions overhauled their secondary and have a well-stocked offense primed for more top-flight production. The Green Bay Packers just scratched the surface last season with quarterback Jordan Love. The Minnesota Vikings still have plenty of assets despite their setbacks. The Chicago Bears are energized by rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

NFL – Lions looking to take another step to reach 1st Super Bowl for in franchise history
The Detroit Lions are a popular pick to reach their first Super Bowl this season. Detroit fell one win short last season, losing a 17-point lead at San Francisco in a 34-31 setback to the 49ers in the NFC championship game. The Lions won two playoff games in one postseason for the first time since winning the 1957 NFL title. General manager Brad Holmes signed quarterback Jared Goff, receiver Amon Ra-St. Brown and offensive tackle Penei Sewell to contract extensions.

NFL – The Bears have Caleb Williams at QB and whole new outlook with his arrival
The Chicago Bears handed the starting job to quarterback Caleb Williams in the offseason when they drafted the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner and USC star with the No. 1 overall pick. He could solidify a position that has historically haunted the founding NFL franchise. But bringing in Williams wasn’t the only big move. The Bears made a blockbuster trade for a playmaking receiver for the second year in a row when they acquired six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen from the Los Angeles Chargers. Last year, they sent the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft to Carolina for DJ Moore. Chicago got the Panthers’ 2024 first-rounder in that deal for Moore and used it to take Williams.

NFL – Colts GM sees different version of Richardson with his 2nd season about to begin
Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard sees the changes in Anthony Richardson. He seems more comfortable with the playbook. He’s matured as a person and as a player. And, yes, even at his size and with his playing style, Richardson understands the necessity to better protect himself. Ballard also understands the second-year quarterback is far from a finished product. So he’s acknowledging there will be a learning curve to navigate the quest he believes Richardson can take the Colts.

NHL – Blackhawks goalie Brossoit will miss the start of training camp after knee surgery
Blackhawks goaltender Laurent Brossoit will miss the start of training camp while he recovers from an operation on his right knee. Brossoit had meniscus surgery on Tuesday in Chicago. Team physician Michael Terry says Brossoit is expected to return in five to seven weeks. The Blackhawks open training camp in mid-September. They visit Utah for their season opener on Oct. 8. The 31-year-old Brossoit agreed to a two-year contract with Chicago on July 1 that carries a cap hit of $3.3 million. He is expected to back up Petr Mrazek in net this season.

Tennis – Wimbledon champ Krejcikova out, Shelton and Tiafoe set to meet in 3rd round
Frances Tiafoe is getting the rematch he wants, a second shot at Ben Shelton at the U.S. Open. But there won’t be a second straight Grand Slam title for Barbora Krejcikova. The Wimbledon champion was knocked out of the U.S. Open in the second round on Wednesday, defeated by Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-4, 7-5. Ruse advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time and will play No. 26 seed Paula Badosa, who eliminated American Taylor Townsend 6-3, 7-5. Tiafoe and Shelton both won second-round matches and will meet Friday. Shelton beat Tiafoe last year in the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Paralympics – Opening ceremony starts the last chapter on a long summer of sport in Paris
The Paralympic flag was raised into the night sky as Paris celebrated the start of its second Olympics on Wednesday. As the flag fluttered at Place de la Concorde in the city’s center its emblem adorned the top of the Arc de Triomphe about three kilometers (two miles) away along the famed Champs-Elysées avenue. French President Emmanuel Macron officially declared the Games open in a ceremony held outside the confines of a stadium, just like when the Olympics opened in the city on July 26.Against the backdrop of a setting sun thousands of athletes paraded down the famed Champs-Elysées avenue to Place de la Concorde in central Paris.
