2024 High School Football Preview – 8-Man Football

2024hsfbpreview

The 2024 High School Football season begins this week around the state of Michigan.  Every day this week, WSJM will highlight an area conference and take a look at the area teams, what they expect and highlight some of the players, looking to end their season at Ford Field, or the Superior Dome for 8-man football.   We would like to thank the area coaches for taking time out of their preseason preparations to open the door for us to get a glimpse of what to expect this season.

2024 Southwest Michigan 8-Man Football League

8-man football has saved football at many schools around the state of Michigan, but not only has Southwest Michigan embraced 8-man football, it has excelled at it.  Many of the top teams in the state are located in Southwest Michigan.  Bridgman is once again a powerhouse, but unable to take part in the playoffs, the combined squad from Our Lady of the Lake, Michigan Lutheran, Countryside Academy and Watervliet Grace Christian form an improving an up and coming, Twin Cities Sharks,  New Buffalo and River Valley’s combined Red Arrow Raiders also continue the trend of athletic cooperation between both schools.  not to mention improving programs in Bangor, Eau Claire and Gobles.  Here’s a look at the local 8-man football teams.

Bangor Vikings
(co-op with Covert)

2023 Record: 4-5 (3-1 SWMI 8-Man League-White)

Head Coach: Jens Mortensen (1st season)

2024 Schedule

08/30 – Battle Creek St. Philip – 7:00 p.m.
09/06 – Muskegon Heights – 7:00 p.m.
09/13 – Wyoming Lee – 7:00 p.m.
09/20 – at Gobles – 7:00 p.m.
09/27 – BYE WEEK
10/04 – at Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian – 7:00 p.m.
10/11 – Fennville – 7:00 p.m.
10/18 – Marcellus – 7:00 p.m.
10/25 – at Eau Claire – 7:00 p.m.

It’s a kind of welcome back for Bangor and “new” football coach Jens Mortensen. Mortensen was Bangor’s football coach in 2021, when he and other school officials made the decision not to field a varsity football team that season and play JV only. Mortensen left after that season, which allowed Tom Matthews to help build the Vikings program back up after a winless season in 2020 during the COVID season and no season in 2021. Matthews went 7-11 in his two seasons, but after stepping down. Mortensen is back to pick up where he left off.

Bangor went 4-5 last season, and considering their first two games were against Mendon and Gobles, the 4-5 record isn’t that bad.

Bangor has 13 players out for this years’ team, which also adds some from Covert as the two schools continue their co-op.

The Vikings have to overcome the loss of one of their best players last year, Running Back, Eloy Martinez Jr. Bangor returns just three starters on offense. Stepping into the running back role is senior Liam Mortensen, (6’1, 190). Joined by sophomore Xavier Preston (5’6, 150). Bangor’s quarterback is junior Jorge Dominquez (5’7, 190), one of his targets is his classmate wide receiver Jaxon Webb (6’2, 155). Up front on the offensive line is sophomore Quinn Dykstra (5’9 215). Coach Mortensen is calling the players for the Bangor jet/fly sweep offense.

Liam Mortensen is the lone senior on the Bangor team this year, and he will line up on both sides of the football, he will also serve as a linebacker, Dykstra also will be a defensive end. They’ll be joined by a pair of juniors, DE Wyatt Schneider (5’5, 145), and DB Elijah Johnson (6’0, 170). Bangor does return four starters on defense in defensive coordinator Rob Birner’s 3-5 alignment.

Johnson is going to serve as the Vikings punt and kick returner as well.

Mortensen says, “With our speed and athleticism on this roster, we plan to be aggressive on both sides of the ball. This group is highly coachable and ready to compete each week.”

He also sees Marcellus as the favorite in the division, “They are the reigning conference champion. They are always well-coached and know their roles.”

Bangor’s first three games are at home this season, staring with Battle Creek St. Philip on Friday, August 30th.

Bloomingdale Cardinals

2023 Record: 1-8 (1-3 SWMI 8-Man League-Blue)

Head Coach: Jason Hayes (3rd year, 1-18)

Bloomingdale has cancelled their 2024 varsity season

Bridgman Bees

2023 Record: 9-0 (3-0 SWMI 8-Man League- White)

Head Coach: Aaron Locke (9th season, 50-22)

2024 Schedule
08/29 – at Memphis – 7:00 p.m.
09/06 – Martin – 7:00 p.m.
09/13 – at Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian – 7:00 p.m.
09/21 – at Inland Lakes – 1:00 p.m.
09/27 – Wyoming Lee – 7:00 p.m.
10/04 – at Grandville Calvin Christian – 7:00 p.m.
10/11 – at Muskegon Heights – 7:00 p.m.
10/18 – at Gobles – 7:00 p.m.
10/25 – Red Arrow – 7:00 p.m.

While Coach Aaron Locke has been able to stuff the trophy case at Bridgman high school with plenty of Conference championship trophies, the one thing it lacks is any MHSAA trophies… of any kind, which is out of Locke’s and the school’s control.

Bridgman has been one of, if not THE dominant 8-man football in the area as well as the state. However due to MHSAA rules on size, Bridgman has not had the chance to play in the MHSAA playoffs. By MHSAA rules, Bridgman’s enrollment number was too high for the Bees to be eligible to compete in the playoffs. It’s a tough break for a team that hasn’t lost a game since September 25, 2020. Bridgman’s current win streak is an incredible 34 games. And the irony is that Bridgman was able to compete in the playoffs the same season they lost their last game.

Locke is back for his 9th season at the helm of the Bees program, with a record of 50-22 over that period, however since going to 8-man football. Bridgman is 43-2. Bridgman has a total of 15 players on the roster this season with 6 of them seniors.

Bridgman’s offense has four starters back this season for offensive coordinator Steve Veldman. His 8-Man Spread offense will be counting in QB Chuck Pagel (5’10, 175), Wide receivers Wade Haskins (6’3, 210), and Ethan Stine (5’9, 145). Also running back, John Necas (5’8, 165). Locke says his entire offensive line is all new with center Owen Heath, and guard Lincoln Smith, but they are still looking for someone to step into that role. Bridgman will also have Ty Adams (6’4, 205) playing tight end, and Brock Johnson will provide some depth at running back.

Locke, will be calling the defense, and has just 3 players returning in their even front defensive scheme. Heath and Drew Neidlinger (5’10, 190) will serve as defensive tackles. Adams is joined by Smith at middle linebacker, Haskins and Stine playing at cornerback and Necas at outside linebacker.

Haskins will serve as the Bees kick returner.

According to Locke, “We lost a lot of seniors last year, especially our O-line. That will be the biggest thing for us is getting these guys ready. The guys stepping in our quality guys. We have a lot of our skill positions back, Chuck Pagel at QB, who spreads the ball around well – last he had 8 receivers with 3 or more TDs. Wade Haskins and Ethan Stine are two of the best receivers in the state. Both should have a Big year. Ty Adams should also get a lot of touches too. Running game with Brock Johnson and John Necas should bring some balance to our offense. We should be difficult to stop. Defensively, we have mostly a new line backing crew, but again, they will be tough, Wade and Ethan should have coverage locked down on the outside.”

Lock says, “We always look forward to playing tough teams like Martin and Northpointe Christian. We have a tougher schedule this year, we added state runner up – Inland Lakes HS ( almost to the Mac bridge) and Memphis (in the thumb) – both away games.”

Bridgman opens the season on Thursday, August 29th at Memphis.

Eau Claire Beavers

2023 Record: 2-7 (1-3 SWMI 8-Man League-Red)

Head Coach: Earl Koch (4th season, 10-17)

2024 Schedule
08/29 – at Grandville Calvin Christian – 7:00 p.m.
09/06 – Twin City Sharks – 7:00 p.m.
09/13 – Wyoming Tri-Unity – 7:00 p.m.
09/20 – Martin – 7:00 p.m.
09/27 – at Muskegon Heights – 7:00 p.m.
10/04 – Gobles – 7:00 p.m.
10/11 – at Marcellus – 7:00 p.m.
10/18 – at Red Arrow Raiders – 7:00 p.m.
10/25 – Bangor – 7:00 p.m.

8-Man football has exploded over the last decade in Michigan, with major leap in Southwest Michigan coming in the last 5 years or so. And while Eau Claire made the transition from 11-man to 8-man football around the same time, the Beavers program just hasn’t grown as fast or as much as other schools in the region.

Eau Claire finished at 2-7 last year, a season after a 5-4 regular season the year before. All you have to do is just look at Eau Claire’s schedule from last year to see why. Red Arrow, Bridgman, Wyoming Lee, Tri-Unity, Gobles and Marcellus. That’s just the final six games last year, and all six losses after the Beavers started the season 2-1.

But you can only control what you can control, and Earl Koch returns for his 4th season in control of Eau Claire’s 8 man football squad.

Graduation is great for students, but not for teams looking for experience and maybe a little stability. Eau Claire returns only 3 starters on both offense and defense. Eau Claire does have a sizeable roster for an 8-man team with 24 on the team this season, and they have 5 seniors.

Eau Claire will run out of the T formation this season with Koch calling the offense. Sophomore Ayden Dohm (5’9, 155) is the Beavers quarterback this season. With a pair of seniors behind him, Jovany Raya (5’10, 195) at fullback and Angel Guzman-Valle (5’8, 155) at running back. Providing the running room and protection up front are senior center and guard Thai Wittman (6’2, 275), senior guard and tackle Julio Gonzalez (5’7, 195) and sophomore guard Mickael Claire (5’10, 305).

Defensively Eau Claire lines up in a 2-3-3 set under defensive coordinator Richard Lesniak. Dohm and Guzman-Valle, along with senior Dan Rodriguez (6’1, 155) and sophomore Adrian Anguiano (5-6, 135) all at corner back. At linebacker Raya will be joined by two juniors Kayden Lash-Roseburg (6’0, 160) and Ulysses Perez-Martinez (5’6, 150). Junior Brady Williams (6-1, 185) will play defensive end.

Williams will also handle the kicking and punting duties on special teams. Guzman-Valle and Dohm will be returning kicks.

According to Koch, who is also serving at Eau Claire’s Athletic Director, “We are excited to see the experienced players step up this season and take the leadership roles as well as the newer and younger players contribute to the program. We will be young and inexperienced with something to prove. We had some real close contest last year that we would like to win this year and compete better in games against Gobles and Marcellus.”

As for the rest of the conference, Koch says, “Obviously, returning state champion Martin will be a favorite. Twin Cities will be a real powerhouse this year with almost the entire team returning. Red Arrow will be very tough again as well as Goble and Marcellus. The conferences is very strong from top to bottom.”

Eau Claire opens the season on the road at Grandville Calvin Christian on Thursday, August 29th, then followed by three straight home games against Twin Cities, Wyoming Tri-Unity and then Martin

Fennville Blackhawks

2023 Record: 0-8 (2-4 SWMI 8-Man League-I)

Head Coach: Wendell Hughes (2nd season, 0-8)

2024 Schedule
08/29 – Twin Cities – 7:00 p.m.
09/06 – Gobles – 7:00 p.m.
09/13 – at Bellevue – 7:00 p.m.
09/20 – at Grandville Calvin Christian – 7:00 p.m.
09/27 – Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian – 7:00 p.m.
10/04 – BYE WEEK
10/11 – at Bangor – 7:00 p.m.
10/18 – at Martin – 7:00 p.m.
10/25 – Muskegon Heights – 7:00 p.m.

While Fennville may have been 0-8 last season, they only were able to play 4 games before their season actually ended.

The 2023 squad lost at the Twin City Sharks 36-14, before losses to the Red Arrow Raiders (64-14), Gobles (54-6) and Grandville Calvin Christian (28-20) before a lack of available players forced them to shut down the season and forced the Blackhawks to forfeit their last 4 games. Especially with Martin, Bridgman, and Mendon still to come.

Fennville gives it another go this season, but still facing the same issue of a limited size roster. Fennville has 13 players for this season’s squad. Of those 13 players only 2 are seniors.

Fennville has four starters back on offense as well as defense. The Blackhawks plan to run a Flexbone 8-man offense, under Coach Hughes. He does have a few options at quarterback, which is rare for an 8-man team. Senior Quinn Rosema (6’1, 170) would seem to be the front runner for the Blackhawks offense, but junior Carter Thompson (6’0, 155) can play quarterback, he’ll also line up at wide receiver and at running back. Junior Ely Schut (6’3, 170) is also an option at wide receiver. In front, Fennville will count on junior Zack Onken (6’2, 250) at center.

Fennville will align in a 3-2 set, with Rosema joining senior Makai Weimer (5’11, 130) at defensive back. At linebacker will be junior Trinity Solis (5’3, 170), and a defensive end will be Ethan Rosencrans (5’9, 145).

Another rare thing for an 8-man teams is a few choices on special teams with Schut serving kicking and punting duties. Roseman will be able to step into that role as well. Schut will handle returns, rotating with Weimer and junior Ashton Halcomb (5’8, 150).

Coach Hughes calls his young core the nucleus of his team as they grow the program. He says, “We lack depth, but I feel good about our starters. As long as we stay healthy & eligible, I believe we’ll have a competitive season! We’re slowly building a culture where our student athletes are proud to be a Blackhawk & excited to be part of the football program. We’re in a better place than we were at this time last year but still have much work to do to continue building this thing! It’s a great day to be a Blackhawk!”

He says that Martin is the favorite in the conference.

Fennville opens the season at home against the Twin Cities Sharks on Thursday, August 29th.

Gobles Tigers

2023 Record: 7-3 (1-2 SWMI 8-Man League-Red)

Head Coach: Gregory Eichler (3rd season, 10-9)

2024 Schedule
08/29 – at Colon – 7:00 p.m.
09/06 – at Fennville – 7:00 p.m.
09/13 – Marcellus – 7:00 p.m.
09/20 – Bangor – 7:00 p.m.
09/27 – Wyoming Tri-Unity – 7:00 p.m.
10/04 – at Eau Claire – 7:00 p.m.
10/11 – at Martin – 7:00 p.m.
10/18 – Bridgman – 7:00 p.m.
10/25 – Twin City – 7:00 p.m.

Back in 1999 and 2000, Gobles season ended with losses in the state championship games at the then Pontiac Silverdome. Of the three Gobles losses, all three were to state champion level competition.

Gobles actually beat the defending state champion Martin in week 4 53-16. But fell in the rematch in the 8-man regional finals 28-6. With the other two losses being a 20-17 defeat to Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian and at 35-6 loss to Bridgman. Just showing how good 8-man football is becoming around the state and especially here in Southwest Michigan.

Gobles coach Greg Eichler returns for his 4th season on the Tigers sidelines and looks to continue the improvement in his program each and every year under his direction. After losing a group of 15 seniors from last years team, he has 20 players on the team this season with 12 returning seniors.

Gobles offense has exactly half of their starters on offense back (four), and will run from their single wing offense directed by offensive coordinator Mason Wiseley. Gobles has two all-state players back on offense this season, Seniors RB Mason Mansfield (5’8, 180) and OL Carter Bell (6’0, 250). Also key seniors are QB Preston Misak (6’3, 170) and TE Jack Geiger (6’6, 240). Two key juniors are RB Nathan Ray (5’9, 170), and WR/RB Steve Juarez (5’7, 180).

Those six players will also be lining up on defense, with Mansfield at free safety, Bell on the d-line. Misak, Ray, and Juarez at linebacker, and Geiger as defensive end. Joining them in the Tigers 2-3 defense, with Eichler also serving as defensive coordinator, will be junior, DB Aiden Beam (5’9, 150) and senior DB Caleb O’Connor (6’0, 175).

Special teams will have Beam in the role as kicker as well.

Eichler went into detail about his team for this year, “ Even while graduating a very good senior class, the Tigers have a promising outlook for 2024. The Tigers return all-state RB/FS Mason Mansfield and all-state OL Carter Bell. Several other key returning players include QB/LB Preston Misak, RB/LB Nathan Ray, and TE/DE Jack Geiger. The Tigers had a successful JV team last season that will be moving up several players who should be impact players right away such as RB/WR/LB Steven Juarez, C/DT Tucker Greffe, G/LB AJ Salinas, and WR/DB/K Aiden Beam. Gobles also welcomes WR/DB Caleb O’Connor back to the team as he was a key contributor on the JV two seasons ago.

The backfield is going to be very strong as it will feature a slew of weapons. Mansfield should be one of the better backs in 8-man football, while Ray teamed up with Mansfield on a state-placing 4×100 relay team. Juarez has comparable speed to Mansfield and Ray, while Misak is a taller, downhill back who also throws the ball well. O’Connor offers another option on the outside as he is a good athlete who can play at multiple positions.

The offensive line will have some good size and strength as it averages about 240 lbs and has good athleticism. They are also a physical unit. As long as they build good chemistry and work well together, the offensive line will again be a formidable unit for us.

There are several spots that need to be replaced on the defense from last year. The defense this year will be faster than last year’s unit, but not as experienced. So long as the defense tackles well and plays the physical nature of football that Gobles expects, they will be very good.”

As for the rest of the conference, Eichler says there are several schools that will compete for it.

Gobles opens the season on the road at Colon on Thursday, August 29th. With their first home game two weeks later on September 13th against Marcellus.

Year 6 of the Marcellus Wildcats under head coach Nathan Davies, and the 5th playing 8-man football. While Marcellus is coming off of a 7-3 season, the best may still be yet to come.

Not only was Marcellus undefeated in Conference play, the Wildcats were the only team in the division with a winning record. However a pair of losses to Martin brought Marcellus down to earth. While Marcellus lost, in a low scoring game for 8-man football, 28-14 at Martin in week 8, before falling in the opening round of the playoffs 44-18.

A young but talented squad is how Davies describes the 2024 Marcellus team, and young they are. Marcellus returns only 3 starters on offense and 3 on defense, and of the 16 players on the team, 8 of them are seniors.

Marcellus will run multiple offensive alignments this season under Offensive Coordinator Sam Adams. Led on the field by Senior Quarterback Parker Adams. Protection up front provided by Senior Adam Bates and Sophomore Brock Woodhouse.

The Wildcats line up in a 2-3-3 defensive set with three key seniors leading the way, DB Beau Ferguson, LB Brock McWilliams, and LB Yona Goodlow.

Abram Coffey will handle the kicking duties.

Marcellus will open the season with a road game at Morenci, who went 2-6 last season. One added bonus this season, they will face Martin again this season, but unlike the two matchups last year, this year the game will be at Marcellus.

10/25 – at Bridgman – 7:00 p.m.

The Red Arrow Raiders enter their 4th season as the combined effort of New Buffalo and River Valley, the first of many combined co-op teams already in existence or to come.

The Raiders have successfully combined the two schools’ teams into a good and winning program. But despite the success, the playoffs remain just out of reach. The combination of the enrollment of both schools mean that Red Arrow cannot compete in the 8-man playoffs. While it is a double edged swore, fielding a good and winning football team comes at the cost of making the playoffs.

Red Arrow Matt Johnson comes back in his 12th year as coach, It’s his fourth in control of the Raiders after the previous 8 seasons with New Buffalo

Red Arrow will field a roster of 14 players with exactly half of them seniors. The Raiders have three starters back on offense and on defense.

Johnson will be calling the plays as Red Arrow runs a spread offense. Senior Ethan Lijewski (5’9, 155) will start at quarterback for the Raiders, with the help of another group of seniors at the skill positions. M’nason Smothers (5’8, 145) starts at running back and Adam Slavens (5’10, 165) will be at wide receiver. On the line providing some of the protection and blocking up front in senior David Nicely (6’0, 235). Johnson says his offensive skill players do have speed, which makes them threats on every down.

The Raiders will set up in a 2-3-3 defensive set, with Smothers and Nicely playing defense as well. Other person beside Nicely on the defensive line is Junior Lucas Forker (6’3, 210). Also joining on the defense is senior Kyran Collins (5’10, 160). Johnson will be defensive coordinator as well as he calls his defense a strength.

Johnson looks at Bridgman, Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian, and Twin Cities as favorites in the league.

The Red Arrow Raiders will again play two home games at New New Buffalo and two home games at River Valley.

They open the season at their New Buffalo home on Thursday, August 29 against Mendon, before playing three road games and coming back to their River Valley home to face the Twin Cities Sharks.

Twin Cities Sharks
(Our Lady of the Lake, Michigan Lutheran, Countryside Academy, Watervliet Grace Christian Co-op)

2023 Record: 5-4 (2-2 SWMI 8-Man League- White)

Head Coach: Peter Murphy (4th season, 7-20)

2024 Schedule:
08/29 – at Fennville – 7:00 p.m.
09/06 – at Eau Claire – 7:00 p.m.
09/13 – at Martin – 7:00 p.m.
09/20 – Adrian Lenawee Christian – 7:00 p.m.
09/27 – at Red Arrow Raiders – 7:00 p.m.
10/04 – Grand Rapids Sacred Heart – 7:00 p.m.
10/11 – Wyoming Lee – 7:00 p.m.
10/18 – Wyoming Tri-Unity – 7:00 p.m.
10/25 – at Gobles – 7:00 p.m.

A rough first three years for Twin City Shark under Pete Murphy may have finally paid off. The Sharks went 5-4 last season after a 2-7 year in 2022. But the ceiling may not have been reached.

The Sharks are the co-operative 8-man football team comprised of student athletes from Our Lady of the Lake Catholic, Michigan Lutheran, Countryside Academy, and now Watervliet Grace Christian. It may only add a handful of athletes to draw from, it does add to the numbers for the Sharks roster, and every man, or woman can help.

Murphy, in addition to his head coaching responsibilities again will handle the role of offensive coordinator. The Sharks multiple offensive sets bring back seven starters from the 2023 team. Murphy’s team has 25 on the roster, which would be the most playing football before the Sharks were formed and the team was just called Lake Michigan Catholic. The 25 players on the Sharks now are entering their fourth season under Murphy and the roster has plenty of experience.

Twin City will be counting on five key starters, who play offense and defense. Seniors Ty Johnson (QB/LB, 6’0”-170), Colin Watts (RB/LB, 5’9”-165), Isaiah Gill (TE/LB, 6’7”-195), and Micah Herbst (WR/DB, 6’0”-150), and junior Cameron Rand (OL/DL, 6’0” – 230). When asked about special teams, Murphy jokingly said we don’t do special teams.

The Sharks defense, who return all eight starters, are being called by defensive coordinator Todd Smith and will be a base 2-3 alignment. And will be tested early as they play their first three games of the season on the road and the first home game will be against defending state champion Adrian Lenawee Christian.

This will be undoubtedly the most experienced team in the Sharks brief history, and that’s one reason Murphy expects to be one of the top teams in the Southwest Michigan 8-Man League, along with Martin, NorthPointe Christian as Gobles.

The Sharks open the 2024 season at Fennville on Thursday, August 29. The Sharks home games will again be played at the Lakeshore Rocket Football Facility just south of Lakeshore’s Al Stockman Stadium and Lakeshore’s soccer, baseball, and softball complex.

You can catch Coach Pete Murphy every Saturday on The Coaches on News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM.

Coming up Tuesday, Southwest 10 Conference Preview
