AAA: be ready for back to school traffic

AAA of Michigan has issued a safety alert for all Michigan drivers as students prepare to return to school.

AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland tells us the biggest thing drivers should be prepared for is the increase in traffic that’s about to be on the roads in the morning.

That’s why we alert drivers that it’s really important that you’re aware that the kids are back to school so that you can be alert looking out for pedestrians, bicyclists, buses, as well as bus stops,” Woodland said.

Woodland says drivers are reminded to give themselves extra time in the morning so they don’t feel the need to speed. She also has a reminder to students who walk or bike to school.

As parents, you want to advise your kids, now that they’re out there, if they are walking to school, you want to advise them to pay attention at all times. They want to avoid texting, wearing headphones, so that they can detect nearby traffic.”

AAA surveys have found 14% of drivers will admit to going around school buses when their red lights are on and the stop arm is extended. That’s illegal in Michigan.

Some schools around the state will be back in session as early as next week. Woodland says AAA wants everyone to be safe.
