Tigers 8, Cubs 2 – Greene, Sweeney and Carpenter homer as the Tigers beat the Cubs 8-2
Riley Greene, Trey Sweeney and Kerry Carpenter homered, helping the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2. Detroit won for the seventh time in nine games, bouncing back nicely after losing 3-1 to Chicago in the series opener on Tuesday. Greene, Sweeney and Carpenter were among seven left-handed batters in the Tigers’ starting lineup for the matchup with Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon. Brant Hurter (1-1), the second of five Detroit pitchers, worked 3 2/3 innings for his first win in his fourth major league appearance. The 6-foot-6 left-hander was struck by Seiya Suzuki’s comebacker in the sixth, but he stayed in the game for one more batter.  Christian Bethancourt hit a two-run homer off Hurter in the fifth, but the Cubs (62-65) left six runners on base on manager Craig Counsell’s 54th birthday. Taillon (8-8) pitched five innings of six-hit ball.  The Tigers broke it open when they scored four runs in the ninth against Jack Neely in his big league debut. Greene singled home Zach McKinstry before Carpenter hit a three-run shot on a 3-0 fastball for his 12th homer of the season.

White Sox 6, Giants 2 – Korey Lee and Lenyn Sosa deliver RBI hits in the 9th as White Sox beat Giants 6-2
Korey Lee hit a tiebreaking two-run single that highlighted a four-run ninth inning as the Chicago White Sox snapped a four-game skid with a 6-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. Luis Robert Jr. and Andrew Benintendi drew consecutive walks off Erik Miller (3-4) with one out in the ninth. After Andrew Vaughn reached on an infield single, Miller struck out Gavin Sheets. Then, Lee singled on a 2-2 fastball from Spencer Bivens, giving the White Sox a 4-2 lead. Lenyn Sosa followed with another two-run single to help seal the win. Fraser Ellard (1-1) retired three batters and earned the win.

NFL – Lions All-Pro tackle Penei Sewell leaves practice with a foot injury
Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell has left practice with a foot injury. It’s potentially a major setback for a team with high expectations. Sewell, an All-Pro last season, was evaluated by the team’s medical staff after he left the practice field on Wednesday. The defending NFC North champions are counting on Sewell to help protect quarterback Jared Goff and to create holes for running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. The Lions host Pittsburgh on Saturday in the final preseason game for both teams.

NFL – Steelers QB Russell Wilson plans to play in preseason finale against Detroit
Russell Wilson wants another shot to get the Pittsburgh Steelers offense heading in the right direction before the regular season starts. The veteran quarterback says he anticipates playing in Pittsburgh’s preseason finale against Detroit. Wilson played five mostly listless series in a loss to Buffalo last week after dealing with a calf injury that limited his participation in training camp. Coach Mike Tomlin indicated he will wait until closer to game time to make a decision, though Wilson says he’s eager to generate some positive momentum with the regular season approaching.

Tennis – Why wasn’t Jannik Sinner suspended after two positive steroid tests?
No. 1-ranked men’s tennis player Jannik Sinner will be playing in the U.S. Open — which begins in New York next week — even though word just emerged that he tested positive twice in March for a banned anabolic steroid. It’s a case that no one knew about until Tuesday and one that has drawn all sorts of questions — and, in some instances, criticism — from other players who wonder whether there was a double standard at play because of Sinner’s success, are confused about why this was all kept under wraps and want to know why Sinner was allowed to keep competing before there was a resolution.

NCAAFB – Michigan tries to repeat as champs without Harbaugh, McCarthy and Co.
College football’s defending national champions have a lot of new faces in important places. Michigan promoted Sherrone Moore to replace Jim Harbaugh, who bolted to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. A new quarterback will take snaps in place of J.J. McCarthy. The offensive line does not have one returning starter after six players from last year’s unit landed with NFL teams. Harbaugh took defensive coordinator Jesse Minter with him and some of his assistants, forcing Moore to build a staff from scratch on that side of the ball. The Wolverines open the season Aug. 31 against Fresno State.

NCAAFB – MSU’s Smith drew players away from Oregon St, persuaded Spartans to stay
Jonathan Smith seems to be what Michigan State needs, nearly a year after sexually charged allegations against Mel Tucker rocked the program. Smith has a steady presence and experience in turning around a team, following Tucker’s attempts to market a dynamic personality that didn’t help him in a messy situation. The 45-year-old Smith eased his transition by getting some Oregon State players and several coaches to come with him while convincing some key Spartans to stay. The Smith era begins with a Friday night game on Aug. 30 against Florida Atlantic.

NCAAFB – There are players in their mid-20s all over college football, here’s why
The impact of the NCAA ruling granting an extra year of eligibility as a result of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season remains apparent four years later as players extend their college careers into their mid-20s.Hundreds of Football Bowl Subdivision players are in their sixth season of eligibility and dozens are in their seventh year or later. Miami tight end Cam McCormick is entering his ninth season of eligibility at the age of 26. No. 17 Oklahoma State has two seventh-year players in quarterback Alan Bowman and linebacker Justin Wright. Fourteen other Oklahoma State players are entering their sixth seasons.

NCAAFB – Carroll back to USC… as a teacher
Pete Carroll is heading back to the University of Southern California as a teacher. Carroll told KJR-FM that he plans to teach a class at USC in the spring, and the university confirmed the championship-winning football coach’s return in some capacity. The details of Carroll’s role haven’t been determined. Carroll coached USC through the Trojans’ best stretch of the past half-century from 2001-2009. Carroll’s teams went 97-19 and won two national championships while reestablishing USC as a national power. He left USC in late 2009 for the Seattle Seahawks, coaching the NFL team to a 137-89 record and the franchise’s only championship.
