With the summer winding down and the new school year approaching, it’s time to get kids prepared, and that goes beyond buying classroom supplies.

The Berrien County Health Department continues to encourage parents to get their kids vaccinated against preventable diseases. BCHD public health nurse and school health coordinator Karen Kortebein says immunizations are the best way of  preventing infectious disease from spreading.

We recommend children be fully vaccinated for everything that’s recommended,” Kortebein said.

Kortebein says if your child is sick and not feeling well, don’t force them to go to school.

Of course, staying home when you have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, make sure that the child is recovered at least 24 hours before returning to school, good hand washing.”

Kortebein says staying up to date on immunizations helps keep children and their classmates safe and healthy throughout the school year. Incoming preschoolers, kindergarteners, and seventh graders need to update immunizations before school begins.

The BCHD is looking to schedule vaccine clinics before the start of classes, and appointments are available at both the Benton Harbor and Niles locations. Just call the Berrien County Health Department.
