60-year-old Jim Dreyer has called off his swim across Lake Michigan.
The Holland man departed Grand Haven on Tuesday, planning to swim about 90 miles to Milwaukee. However, an online chart of his progress shows Dreyer turned around shortly before noon on Thursday, about 37 miles out.
Dreyer, known as “The Shark,” first swam across the lake in 1998. He made two more attempts last year, but had to turn around both times due to poor conditions.
In this week’s swim, the chart shows Dreyer getting off course a few times. His return to Michigan, though, was in a straight line, right into Holland.
Dreyer is planning to direct the Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim for the 50th anniversary of the disaster.
