A beach in Van Buren County has been closed due to bacteria in the water.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy says Woolfe Park in Decatur Township is closed. The reason is high E coli levels.

The Van Buren Cass District Health Department does the testing and then advises the village of Decatur of the results. It says this is the first year they’ve ever tested the water at Woolfe Park, so it’s not known if this is a regular issue, perhaps caused by runoff.

More samples were taken Monday, and the health department expects it won’t be until late Tuesday before the new results are in.

People are advised to avoid swimming in Lake of the Woods until the samples come back clean.
