Tigers 3, Guardians 0 – Javier Báez hits a 3-run homer, Tigers blank Guardians 3-0
Javier Báez hit a three-run homer in the second inning and six pitchers combined on a four-hitter, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians. Báez homered for the first time since April 14, belting a 409-footer into the left-field bleachers in his second game at the bottom of the batting order. The Guardians, who have the best home record in the AL at 33-15, lost for the eighth time in 12 games and had their lead in the Central cut to 4 1/2 games over Minnesota. Easton Lucas picked up his first major league win with two perfect innings of relief.

Rangers 2, White Sox 1 – Scherzer takes over 10th on MLB Ks list and Semien homers as Rangers beat White Sox 2-1
Max Scherzer had a season-high nine strikeouts to take over 10th place on MLB’s career list with the most among active pitchers, Marcus Semien homered and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1. Scherzer pushed his career total to 3,400 after first passing former teammate and fellow three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander with his third strikeout of the game. Two days before his 40th birthday, Scherzer threw 62 of 85 pitches for strikes. He allowed one run and walked one while pitching three-hit ball over six innings. The Rangers won their fifth game in a row. Chicago is 27-78 with an 11-game losing streak.  Luis Robert Jr. had a home run for Chicago.

MLB – Dylan Cease throws second no-hitter in Padres history, 3-0 over Nationals
Former Chicago White Sox and South Bend Cubs pitcher Dylan Cease pitched the second no-hitter in San Diego Padres history, a 3-0 win over the Washington Nationals that completed a three-game sweep. After falling one out short of a no-hitter two years ago when he gave up a single to current teammate Luis Arráez, Cease accomplished the feat when he retired CJ Abrams on a game-ending flyout to right. Cease struck out nine and walked three in his third complete game in 145 starts. He threw a career-high 114 pitches. Joe Musgrove pitched the Padres’ first no-hitter against Texas on April 9, 2021.

MLB – Scherzer passes Verlander for 10th on career strikeout list with 3,400
Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer has taken over 10th place on the career strikeout list, and the most among active pitchers, with 3,400. The Texas Rangers right-hander had a season-high nine Thursday against the Chicago White Sox. It came in his seventh start this season since offseason back surgery, and two days before his 40th birthday. He overtook former teammate and fellow three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander for 10th place with his third strikeout of the game for 3,394. Scherzer pitched in his 464th career game over 17 big league seasons. Scherzer was part of World Series titles with the Nationals in 2019 and the Rangers last season.

NCAAFB – Michigan fields overhauled teams in quest to return to national title game
Michigan and Washington shared the field at Big Ten Media Days on Thursday. It was the first time the teams had met since they faced off in the national championship game that Michigan won in January. Both teams have new coaches and are hoping to get back to the College Football Playoff with dramatically different rosters. Michigan coach Sherrone Moore says the program’s national title expectations haven’t changed after coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterback J.J. McCarthy left for the NFL.  The Wolverines started the offseason with five returning starters, then lost all-conference safety Rod Moore to a torn ACL in spring practice. While the most glaring need is finding someone to replace McCarthy, another pressing concern is finding five new starters on an offensive line that lost its top six players to the NFL.  Still, Moore isn’t about to start lowering the expectations at Michigan, which has an FBS-leading 1,004 all-time wins — and certainly not after the Wolverines won their first national championship since 1997. He’s challenging his players to repeat the feat.

NFL – Hulk Hogan visits Lions camp, says coach Campbell missed his calling as a wrestler
Hulk Hogan visited Detroit Lions practice and says coach Dan Campbell would have been good in the squared circle. The pro wrestling great even came up with a nickname for Campbell, calling him “Dirty Dan.” Hogan was in the Motor City to promote his new beer brand. Hogan and Campbell stood together after practice, recording a promotional video. Campbell seemed to get a kick out of Hogan’s schtick. Donald Trump invited Hogan to speak at the Republican National Convention last week in Milwaukee and he accepted.

NFL – Bears safety Jonathan Owens taking break from camp to support wife Simone Biles
Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens has arranged to take leave from training camp and is heading to Paris Monday night to watch his wife Simone Biles compete for the U.S. gymnastics team. Owens, who signed with Chicago in free agency after a year in Green Bay, didn’t get the chance to see Biles compete at the last Olympics due to the pandemic. He has the support of Bears coaches, players and management. The Bears had a player’s relative win an Olympic medal in each of the previous two Summer Games. Owens and Biles married last year. She won three gold medals at the Rio Games in 2016.

Olympics – With big goals & gambles, Paris aims to reset Olympics with audacious Games
Paris has long been a city of dreamers: Just look at the Eiffel Tower, for decades the world’s loftiest structure. But France’s capital is aiming higher still with its first Olympic Games in a century, which open Friday. The most audacious Olympic opening ceremony ever — a gala spectacular on the River Seine that even French President Emmanuel Macron says initially felt like “a crazy and not very serious idea” — kicks off 16 days of competition that promise to be ground-breaking. Expect a heady blend of Olympic sports, iconic Paris monuments and France’s famous “savoir faire” in its world-renowned capital of fashion, gastronomy and culture could help secure the Games’ longer-term future. But Paris’ challenges are huge, too.

Olympics – US women’s basketball team arrives at Olympics via train from London
The U.S. women’s basketball team has arrived at the Olympics via train. The U.S. had special accommodations for the 90-minute trip, just like the men’s team did on Wednesday. The team arrived at the London train station an hour before departure, and the team was whisked through passport control. The players and coaches then were escorted to a private lounge area before going down to the train.

Olympics – Canada women’s coach removed by Canadian Committee over drone scandal
The Canadian Olympic Committee has removed women’s national soccer head coach Bev Priestman for the remainder of the Paris Games following an alleged drone spying scandal. The COC said in a statement released at 1:24 a.m. local time Friday that assistant coach Andy Spence would lead the defending gold medalists for the remainder of the tournament. Canada’s camp was thrown into disarray this week after two team staffers were sent home for allegedly using a drone to spy on a New Zealand practice. Priestman denied any involvement, but did not attend Thursday’s 2-1 victory over New Zealand as FIFA — soccer’s world governing body — and the International Olympic Committee investigate.

Olympics – United States women beat Zambia to start Olympic campaign
Mallory Swanson scored a pair of goals just moments apart in the first half as the United States women opened the Olympics with a 3-0 victory Thursday night over Zambia, giving new coach Emma Hayes a win in her first major tournament with the team.  Trinity Rodman also scored for the United States, which is looking to add a record fifth gold medal to its Olympic collection. Zambia was hurt in the 33rd minute when Pauline Zulu was sent off with a red card, and the team was limited to 10 players the rest of the way.
