Guardians 2, Tigers 1 – Josh Naylor singles home his brother Bo in the 8th, Guardians edge Tigers 2-1
Josh Naylor singled with two outs in the eighth inning, scoring younger brother Bo Naylor with the go-ahead run, as the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians edged the Detroit Tigers 2-1. Bo Naylor drew a walk against Beau Brieske, then stole second base. Following an intentional walk to José Ramírez, Josh Naylor lined a ball up the middle that second baseman Colt Keith could only deflect into center field. Guardians ace Tanner Bibee left after five innings with leg cramps. The right-hander winced while walking onto the field to begin the sixth and spent several minutes stretching his legs, to no avail.

Rangers 10, White Sox 2 – García snaps slump and Eovaldi strikes out 10 as Rangers win 4th in a row
Adolis García snapped out of a long slump with three hits and scored the go-ahead run, Nathan Eovaldi struck out 10 without any walks in seven innings and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 10-2. Corey Seager and Robbie Grossman had solo homers for the Rangers before Nathaniel Lowe hit a three-run shot. The 27-77 White Sox lost their 10th game in a row to fall 50 games under .500 for the first time since finishing 56-106 in 1970. They are the first team since the expansion Mets in 1962 to lose 77 of their first 104 games. Luis Robert Jr. homered for Chicago.

Brewers 3, Cubs 2 – Contreras hits tiebreaking double in 9th as Brewers beat Cubs 3-2
William Contreras hit a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2. Blake Perkins singled leading off the ninth against Héctor Neris. Contreras put Milwaukee on top one out later when he lined a double to left-center, helping the NL Central leaders end a rough day on a winning note. Before the game, the Brewers placed Christian Yelich on the 10-day injured list because of inflammation in his lower back and they were bracing for the possibility that their All-Star outfielder will miss significant time. Reliever Bryse Wilson held Chicago to one run in four innings. Jakob Junis then pitched one-hit ball over three innings before Joel Payamps worked the ninth for his fifth save. Chicago’s Seiya Suzuki homered.

MLB – White Sox fall 50 games under .500, on pace to match most losses in modern era
The Chicago White Sox haven’t had a record this bad in more than a half-century. They are now on pace to match the most losses in baseball’s modern era. With their 10-2 loss at Texas, the 27-77 White Sox have dropped 10 in a row and are now 50 games under .500 for the first time since finishing 56-106 in 1970. They are the first team since the expansion Mets in 1962 to lose 77 of their first 104 games. New York that year went on to a record 120 losses. After one-run losses each of the previous two nights against Texas, the White Sox were still close Wednesday until the reigning World Series champions had a six-run eighth inning.

NBA – NBA says it has signed new 11-year media rights deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon
The NBA signed its 11-year media rights deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday after saying it was not accepting Warner Bros. Discovery’s $1.8 billion per year offer to continue its longtime relationship with the league. The media rights deals were approved by the league’s Board of Governors last week and will bring the league about $76 billion over those 11 years. WBD had five days to match a part of those deals and said it was exercising its right to do so, but its offer was not considered a true match by the NBA. It says it will now take appropriate action.  The WNBA also finalized an 11 year media rights deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon as well.    While the league didn’t reveal the rights value, a person familiar with the deal said the WNBA would receive about $200 million a year. The deal will begin with the 2026 season and run through 2036 with it potentially re-evaluated after three years which could give the WNBA a chance to get even more money. The WNBA’s deal was announced shortly after the NBA was one confirmed.
NHL – Oilers hire Stan Bowman as GM less than 3 years since he resigned from Blackhawks
The Edmonton Oilers have hired Stan Bowman as general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations. Bowman is the first former Chicago Blackhawks employee to be re-hired by an NHL team since the 2010 sexual assault scandal came to light in recent years. The team announced the hiring Wednesday. The league reinstated Bowman, coach Joel Quenneville and fellow executive Al MacIsaac earlier this month. Bowman resigned as Chicago’s GM in 2021 after an independent investigation found the organization mishandled the allegations made by player Kyle Beach that he was sexually assaulted by video coach Brad Aldridge.

NFL – Lions aiming for Super Bowl after season that was the franchise’s best in decades
The Detroit Lions are coming off their best season in generations, earning two playoff victories in one postseason for the first time since winning the 1957 NFL title. The Lions are one of four franchises that haven’t reached the Super Bowl, but they’re No. 4 among favorites to reach the championship game, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. It’s easy to see what oddsmakers like about Detroit. The Lions have won 20 of their last 27 games in the regular season and are coming off a closely contested loss in the NFC championship game at San Francisco.

NCAAFB – Big Ten media days provide welcome to USC, UCLA and other Ex Pac-12 schools
A new era of Big Ten football kicked off Wednesday when first-year UCLA coach DeShaun Foster and Southern California coach Lincoln Riley took the podium inside Lucas Oil Stadium. Both stepped up to the microphone as their school fight songs played. They were joined by new Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith, who also made the jump from the Pac-12 to Michigan State. And now, the real transition begins. The coaches from the previous Big Ten members are now figuring out how to deal with the travel. Some hope to welcome the California schools for November football games.

NCAAFB – Ferentz still committed to Iowa after watching Belichick and Saban move on
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz watched two of his best coaching friends, Bill Belichick and Nick Saban, walk away from football after last season. So, naturally, college football’s longest-tenured coach smiles and nods as he reflects on his own potential exit. Ferentz isn’t planning on leaving the sport he loves or the school he’s become synonymous with any time soon. But he’s stayed in touch with Saban and Belichick even since he and Saban were assistants on Belichick’s staff with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns from 1993-95.

Olympics – Salt Lake City celebrates announcement that it’ll host the 2034 Winter Games
Salt Lake City has been formally awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics following a vote by the International Olympic Committee in Paris. The decision gives Utah its second Games after hosting in 2002. Salt Lake City was the lone contender the Olympic committee was considering for 2034. Climate change and high operational costs have reduced the number of cities willing and able to host the Winter Games. Utah has capitalized on low interest elsewhere. The 2034 plan requires no new permanent construction because all 13 venues are already in place.

Olympics – Soccer gets off to violent start as Morocco fans rush the field vs Argentina
Morocco fans crashed the pitch to protest a late goal by Argentina at the opening match of the Paris Olympics men’s soccer tournament. It was an angry and bizarre scene that left the game suspended for nearly two hours with only minutes remaining. Moments before play resumed, the goal was disallowed by VAR for offside, and Morocco held on for a 2-1 victory. But not before a furious reaction from Morocco fans who thought they’d been denied a critical win.

Olympics – France beats US 3-0 in a the start to Olympic soccer
Stunning goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Michael Olise helped France to a 3-0 victory over the United States in the Olympic men’s soccer tournament. Loic Bade added the third with a late header to seal a win that had looked in doubt until former Arsenal striker Lacazette struck with a long range effort in the 61st minute in Marseille.
