The annual Bayview to Mackinac sailboat race is set for this Saturday, attracting hundreds of sailors.

This year marks number 100 for the annual event that sets sail from lower Lake Huron near Port Huron. Bayview Mackinac Chair Charlie Trost told us what makes the race so special.

You have lots of families doing this,” Trost said. “It’s the highlight of the summer. For me growing up, it was the big vacation and we looked forward to it all year. And what this race provides to the community, the families that come out and they’re able to compete against the pro teams and that’s very special, you don’t find that everywhere else.”

Boats from 17 states as far away as Washington, California, Texas, and Winnipeg are participating. Sailors will set sail Saturday morning.

The Bayview Mackinac Race is the world’s longest continuously run long distance freshwater yacht race in the United States.
