Former President Donald Trump called for unity and resilience after an attempt on his life this past weekend, and questions swirl about how it was possible for the gunman to get anywhere near the former president.
President Joe Biden ordered an independent security review of the attack. Former U.S. Attorney of Michigan’s Eastern District Matthew Schneider says the attempted assassination will not stop campaigning from either candidate.
“This is just like what happened after September 11, when president George W. Bush told us, do not be afraid as Americans,” Schneider said. “We need to go and live our lives, and if we cower in the shadows, that means that the terrorists have struck a victory with us. We shouldn’t do that. We should be going out in public. We should be supporting the candidates of our choice, whether that’s Biden or Trump, and going out to rallies to support them. The Secret Service and law enforcement, they will rise to this challenge.”
Schneider says the Secret Service clearly made a mistake, which will be investigated by the FBI. He’s expecting a probe by Congress.
