A murder suspect out of Indiana is in police custody thanks to a roadside license plate reader and action by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.

The department says its Deputy Micah Carlson arrested the 48-year-old suspect in New Buffalo Township after receiving word the suspect was in the area Saturday night.

The department says it, like many other law enforcement agencies around the country, has partnered with local communities and businesses to purchase and maintain license plate reader cameras along public roadways. The license plate readers, known as LPRs, monitor vehicles and will notify patrol deputies if a stolen vehicle or wanted person is observed.

In this case, the plate reader spotted the Indiana suspect in New Buffalo  Township, bringing him to the deputy’s attention.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says technology like LPRs has provided a supplement to law enforcement, and Berrien County as a whole. It says, “the efficient transfer of information between law enforcement agencies enhances the safety of the men and women in law enforcement.”
