There’s a troubling economic report regarding west Michigan businesses.

The latest monthly survey of local businesses and purchasing managers by Grand Valley State University’s College of Business shows sharp declines in orders and purchases. Researcher Brian Long says the auto industry if facing a lot of uncertainty next year..

We have numerous firms that produce components and complete assemblies, like seats and dashboards and the curves and struts and those kinds of things,” Long said. “Especially for the firms that are supplying EVs, the news of the dealer lots starting to fill with an overflow of EVs is simply not good news.”

Long says one of the survey’s metrics that was positive was the employment index. He says the unemployment rate is still dropping and businesses are having an easier time filling open positions.
