Lincoln Township voters to consider millage renewals next month

Voters in Lincoln Township are being asked to approve a few critical millage renewals when they head to the polls on August 6.

Up for renewal is the police operating millage, which Township Clerk Stacy Loar-Porter tells us is essential for the police department to function.

It covers the operations, it’s dedicated solely to the operations of the police department,” Loar-Porter said. “Without it, there would be definite reductions in police services.  So it really funds 100% of our police department.”

The millage has been in place since the 1990s.

It’s the original one when we started the Lincoln Township Police Department.”

The police operating millage is 1.5 mills, and the renewal being requested would be for eight years. The millage would raise an estimated $1.3 million in its first year.

Also on the ballot are two library millages. The first is a renewal and restoration of the original 1959 Lincoln Township Library millage. The ballot question asks residents to restore it to 0.5 mills after a state rollback reduced it to 0.3 mills. That would raise about $88,000 for the library in its first year.

The other library millage does the same for the 1990 millage. That would set the 1990 millage at 0.5 mills after a state rollback to 0.4 mills, raising about $53,000 in its first year.
