Two people are safe after being rescued from Lake Michigan off South Haven by the Van Buren County Marine Patrol on Saturday.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says marine deputies were stationed in Lake Michigan just south of the pier heads around 6 p.m. when they witnessed a pontoon rental boat with more than ten people approaching the pier. It hit a three-foot wave, which submerged the front end of the boat.

Two passengers were thrown from the boat into the water and the boat almost capsized.

The marine deputies were able to pull the two passengers out of the water and help those on the pontoon boat who were not wearing life jackets. The deputies then helped the boat back to the rental dock.

The South Haven Police Department assisted by giving the driver of the boat a voluntary preliminary breath test, which came back negative for alcohol.

There were no injuries.
