Huizenga legislation aims to keep roads clear during protests

Legislation from Congressman Bill Huizenga seeks to keep the roads clear when protests are happening nearby.

Huizenga tells us he’s noticed in recent years that protesters have been gathering in public rights of way and preventing traffic from moving smoothly.

That to me makes no sense,” Huizenga said. “One, as a tactic, I think it backfires, and two, what really doesn’t make sense to me is when you have prosecutors refusing to then go after these people legally.”

Huizenga says his bill seeks to address that inaction by prosecutors.

What my bill would do is it says if you aren’t going to enforce the law on federally funded roadways, then you’re going to get a haircut. You’re going to forfeit some of that federal funding, that gas tax money to the tune of 10%.”

The bill would also require the Secretary of Transportation to certify whether a state is following the law each year.

Huizenga says the legislation is supported by Heritage Action and the America First Policy Institute.
