Police and fire agencies are reminding all Southwest Michigan residents to be safe this Fourth of July weekend.
Independence Day may be over, but there will still be a lot of people shooting off fireworks.
The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety says it responded to several calls about fireworks-related fires this week. That included one at Jean Klock Park, where a fire was stated in the dunes by some fireworks on Thursday night.
The department reminds all residents fireworks are never allowed in any city parks, let alone Jean Klock Park, where the dry dune grass helps create a recipe for trouble.
The department says the dune fire also threatened several nearby structures.
