Walberg introduces legislation to protect association health plans

Legislation that would prevent the U.S. Labor Department from implementing a rule restricting the use of association health plans has been introduced by Congressman Tim Walberg.

Walberg tells us a Trump-era rule expanded the use of association health plans, which are health insurance plans offered by small employers who band together to get more buying power. He says the new federal rule will rescind the Trump-era rule and only decrease choice and increase healthcare costs.

As the Biden administration pursues policies that will increase the cost of healthcare, I’m introducing legislation to block their misguided and disastrous rules,” Walberg said. “Small businesses and their employees should not be targeted by the Biden administration.”

The Labor Department says association health plans often skirt consumer protections required by the Affordable Care Act, which is why they’re being reined in.

The Department of Labor in April announced its rule to limit AHPs.
