
Virgil Leroy Hoese, 88, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2024, in Niles, Michigan.
Virgil was born on August 17, 1935 in Mode, Illinois to the late Glenn William Hoese Sr. and Myrtle C. (Nichols) Hoese.
Along with his parents, Virgil was preceded in death by his siblings, Walter Hoese, Glenn Hoese, Robert Hoese, Donald Hoese, and Carol Hoese.
Left to cherish the memory of Virgil is his brother, Herschel (Helen) Hoese and several nieces and nephews.
A dedicated fan, Virgil bled maize and blue with pride for the University of Michigan football team and cherished the thrill of the game whether it be on the gridiron or the baseball diamond with the Cubs.
Virgil’s passions extended beyond mere spectating; he was an avid poker player, enjoying many an evening card game surrounded by friends. His strategic mind also reveled in the excitement of the horse races, where he not only spectated but often participated in friendly betting as the “local bookie.”
Virgil indulged his love for history and family through genealogy, tracing lineages with dedication. His keen eye for value made him a regular at auctions and sales, always in search of a treasure.
For 18 remarkable seasons, Virgil’s weekends were devoted to ushering at Notre Dame football games, embedding himself in the fabric of the sport he so loved. His spirit and enthusiasm for life’s many games will be deeply missed.
A Memorial Service for Virgil will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions in honor of Virgil, may be made out to Henderson Veterinary Care, 14221 Range Line Rd. Niles, MI 49120, to care for his cat, Flossie.
