Michigan’s hands-free distracted driving laws is a year old, and state police say it has made a difference.

Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw says the law has made it a lot easier to discern what is and isn’t allowed from drivers.

What the hands-free law did is it actually clarified everything that you can do and can’t do with your cell phone,” Shaw said. “It’s pretty simple. If you have a cell phone and you have a vehicle that’s equipped with hands-free devices inside of there, you just hook it up there and you’re all set.”

Shaw notes that Michigan State Police have conducted roughly 4,000 traffic stops related to distracted driving since the law began last year. Those drivers receiving either a warning or citation depending on the severity of the violation.
