MDOT lifting lane restrictions in some construction zones for the weekend

With the Fourth of July holiday weekend about here, the Michigan Department of Transportation is getting out of the way of drivers by removing lane restrictions in 105 out of 174 construction zones statewide.

MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us not all lane restrictions could be lifted, but the agency wanted to make travel as easy as possible.

We have 12 active projects in our region right now,” Schirripa said. “We lift restrictions on four that we were able to get out of the way on, but certainly our contractors want to give their folks a day off too. So it’s a holiday weekend for everybody and we do the best we can to get as many lanes and bridges reopened. Folks are going to be on the road. They’re going to be going places, seeking out friends, going to fireworks, go camping, whatever it may be. So we want to be as out of the way as we can be for the holiday weekend.”

Work zones where lane restrictions remain in place include I-94 in Berrien County, M-40 in Lawton, I-196 in Van Buren County, US-12 and M-51 in Niles, and M-139 between Scottdale Road and John Beers Road in Berrien County.

Schirripa reminds everyone to slow down and put away their cell phones while behind the wheel.
