Michigan State Police are teaming up with law enforcement agencies across the state this month to crack down on speeding.

MSP Lieutenant DuWayne Robinson with the Paw Paw post tells us there are too many drivers ignoring the speed limit and putting others in danger. He says going one mile an hour over the posted speed limit is speeding.

When you are traveling at a speed and basically endangering others around you because your vehicle is going so fast that you’re unable to maintain control of it or it is causing you to be an aggressive or reckless driver, it’s just unnecessary,” Robinson said.

Robinson says state police will have extra patrols out all July looking for lead-footed drivers.

Meanwhile, Berrien County Undersheriff Greg Sanders says with this being Fourth of July week, sheriff’s deputies are keeping a close eye on the roads. He has some advice.

Wear your seatbelts, that’s a big one,” Sanders said. “Don’t text and drive. Remember that hands-free law, that’s a big one. Be courteous to other individuals traveling. Do the speed limit.”

Sanders reminds everyone it’s now illegal to touch your cell phone while driving. He recommends setting up your GPS before you start rolling.

Also remember to arrange for a ride if you’re going to be partying. Sanders says the sheriff’s department will be looking for drunk drivers.
