Mendel Center lineup includes speaking engagement with Magic Johnson

The next lineup for the Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College has been announced, and it includes a visit from a sports legend.

Mendel Center Director George Kendall tells us the Lake Michigan College Speaker Series, formerly the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan Speaker Series, will welcome Earvin Magic Johnson to the Grand Upton Hall on August 23. What will Magic talk about?

It could be on sports, it could be on a philanthropic work, could be on both,” Kendall said. “We’re just trying to decide how best to use this time for our audience.”

Kendall says next up will be former New York City firefighter and 9/11 survivor Tim Brown on September 23.

He was a firefighter and he was on the ground. He almost was crushed when one of the buildings came down. He was very fortunate to duck into a little alcove area. So that certainly gave him a near-death experience.”

Third will be U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Dan Rooney, who will talk about leadership and golf.

Kendall says the Mendel Center is working to arrange a few more speakers to close out the season.

Meanwhile, performances slated to take place at the Mendel Center in the 2024-2025 season include Prince tribute Marshall Charloff and The Purple xPeRIeNCE, the Cirque Musica Holiday Wonderland, The United States Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus, and the Perondi Stunt Dog Experience.

Kendall says LMC always looks for a good variety of shows.

We try to look for multiple genres, try and pull in some things that are possibly new to the area, or like with Magic Johnson, have been in the area for quite a number of years.”

Tickets to individual events go on sale July 15. You can find the full schedule at TheMendelCenter.com.
