Do you know anyone who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, or PTSD?

Priority Health behavioral health medical director Dr. Charletta Dennis says many who have it don’t get help.

It’s usually because they don’t really recognize the symptoms,” Dennis said. “Sometimes people experience things like flashbacks, or they may have avoidance-type behaviors, or there can even be some cognitive or mood symptoms. But if they’re not relating those symptoms to a specific event, then they typically don’t seek treatment for it.”

Dennis says PTSD doesn’t have to be related to wartime or combat. It can develop after living through any event that threatened serious harm or death.

Dennis says PTSD has to be diagnosed by a mental health professional. She adds treatment has improved over the years.
