Clerk: absentee ballots should be going out by now

If you’re wondering when you’ll receive your absentee ballot to vote in the August 6 elections, then there might be a problem.

Berrien County Clerk Sharon Tyler tells us the absentee ballots should have been sent out by now. If you haven’t gotten one, there’s a reason.

People will get notified by their local clerk, not the county clerk, whether they want an AV,” Tyler said. “If you are a voter and you have not specified at this time to your local clerk whether you want to be on the permanent AV list, you will not get an AV ballot, so you need to make sure when the local clerk sends you a letter, must reply.”

Tyler just because a person voted absentee last election, that doesn’t mean they’re marked down somewhere as always voting absentee.

If you want to vote absentee, you should contact your local clerk. That’s the city or township clerk, not the county clerk.

Tyler also advises those voting in August primaries to only vote for candidates within one party. Marking names from different parties will invalidate your ballot. One tip is to take your absentee ballot into a polling location to run it through the tabulator. If the ballot is filled out incorrectly, Tyler says the machine will indicate so.
