Ten groups and nearly a dozen lawmakers are rallied in Lansing this week for criminal justice reform in Michigan.
Tony Gant with Nation Outside, a Michigan-based organization, says one of the policies they are trying to get reformed is juvenile life without parole.
“We don’t believe we should be sentencing children to life,” Gant said. “When we look at the brain science, we know that people aren’t mature enough to understand a lot of the decisions they’re making as children. And we believe we should get, move away from it. Michigan is one of the only states in the union that still sentences children to life without the possibility of parole.”
Other policies the groups are presenting to lawmakers include better healthcare for those incarcerated and a second look from a judge on possibilities of parole for those with long sentences.
