There’s been a major financial boost for three infrastructure projects in Michigan.

The U.S. Transportation Department announced this week $67 million for projects in Kalamazoo, Menominee, and Detroit.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says $21 million will help fix up a dock and port in the Upper Peninsula.

A port essential to local businesses by both shipping and receiving commodities like pulp and pig iron is getting the improvements that it needs,” Buttigieg said. “It’s had a deteriorating dock wall and lacks some of the rail infrastructure that’s needed to efficiently, quickly, and reliably move more goods, which in turn means more heavy trucks need to move over that port in ways that put pressure on that infrastructure.”

The city of Kalamazoo will receive $25 million to rebuild streets to create a connected multi-modal network to move materials.

The city of Detroit will get $20 million to build paths that will be part of the Joe Louis Greenway and Iron Belle Trail systems.
