News broke this week that German engineering group Robert Bosch is considering making an offer to buy Whirlpool Corporation as Bosch seeks to expand its appliances portfolio, and Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad says he’s watching the situation develop.

Whirlpool, which has been a staple of the Benton Harbor area for more than 100 years, has denied to comment on any speculation at the time.

At Whirlpool’s Day of Impact on Thursday, Mayor Muhammad told media he’s had conversations with Whirlpool CEO Marc Bitzer about the speculated sale. While Muhammad would not speak directly about the potential buy-out, he did note that the city of Benton Harbor will continue to work alongside Whirlpool.

According to reports, this would be the biggest shakeup in the household appliances market since 2006 when Whirlpool bought out Maytag.
