Farmers: cherry crops looking good this year

Michigan cherry crops are looking strong again this year.

Nels Veliquette is vice president of Cherry Ke, a farm in Kewadin. He estimates west central Michigan tart cherries will have a 55-million pound crop. Southwest Michigan is around 25 to 30 million pounds.

The biggest production is in northwest Michigan.

The harvest has started,” Veliquette said. “Everybody’s getting ready, getting geared up for Northwest Michigan. That’s the big production area for tart cherries. It looks like right now, up north, aside from weather that might come in, it’s had a pretty good crop this year.”

Veliquette says the weather has calmed down, and it’s looking like a good week to start harvesting the tart cherries.
