Four kayakers are safe after being rescued from the St. Joseph River Channel near Silver Beach on Saturday.
Berrien County Sheriff Chuck Heit tells us two sheriff’s deputies assigned to Silver Beach helped the U.S. Coast Guard rescue the kayakers around 7 p.m.
Two of their kayaks overturned, and one of the kayakers suffered a head injury. The Coast Guard was able to reach the four quickly, and Heit says Deputies Silva and Withington helped the injured kayaker to an ambulance.
The waves in the channel between the piers had gotten rough around the time of the incident.
Heit says all parties did a great job of assisting the struggling kayakers.
