Legendary actor and Benton Harbor native Ernie Hudson was recognized by the city this Saturday in a street renaming.

In honor of Hudson and his work on Hollywood, the Benton Harbor City Commission voted to rename South Fair Avenue from Buss Avenue to Hall Street “Ernie Hudson Way.”

Hudson, on hand for Saturday’s celebration, thanked the community.

“I love that the city and the community thought enough of me and my work to honor me with this street renaming,” Hudson said. “It’s nothing I ever expected, but I’m so…I’m speechless.”

County and state elected officials, family, friends, and community members gathered to celebrate the street renaming. Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhmmad said this was to show the city and others “ordinary people can do extraordinary things and Ernie Hudson is that in real time.”

Hudson grew up right across the street from where his honorary sign is now placed. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School before joining the military, going to college, and starting his acting career.
