YMCA capital campaign gets boost

A donation of $200,000 is being made to the YMCA of Greater Michiana by United Federal Credit Union and Honor Credit Union.

Each credit union is giving $100,000 to the YMCA’s $4.4 million Another Century of Service campaign, intended to upgrade the YMCA facility in St. Joseph. The YMCA’s Jill Haboush tells us they’ve got big plans to improve the facility built in 1981.

Right now, we are working on the first phase, which is a $2.3 million project, and it’s primarily locker room renovations and updates, the addition of a children’s playground, which has actually already been installed, and upgrades to the steam room, which kind of falls into place with the locker room renovation piece,” Haboush said.

Phase Two will include the construction of another gym.

Haboush says the YMCA has so far secured about $1.7 million for the campaign. This latest boost from the credit unions will be a big help.

They actually came to us. They understood that each of the other was supporting and thought it would be a great idea to show how both credit unions are uniting to support the local YMCA and thought that it would be a nice media release to help promote the capital  campaign for the Baton Harbor St. Joseph YMCA.”

The two credit unions will hold an official check presentation on Monday.

Anyone can contribute to the capital campaign as the YMCA seeks to improve its building. You can do so right here.

The YMCA is working with engineers now and hopes some construction can start on Phase One by the fall.
