State Senator Aric Nesbitt is slamming Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel for announcing a plan to sue the fossil fuel industry for contributing to climate change.
Nessel announced this month her department is seeking proposals from legal firms to pursue the lawsuit. She told Bridge Michigan residents of Michigan are facing billions of dollars in economic losses due to the climate crisis, to which the fossil fuel industry knowingly contributed.
Nesbitt on Thursday joined with every member of the Senate Republican Caucus to oppose Nessel’s plan, which he describes as a publicity stunt.
Nesbitt says instead of attacking job creators, Nessel should seek to defend Michiganders from “real threats to their livelihoods and well-being.” The Republican Senate Leader says the state’s residents “deserve leaders who will work to ensure Michigan remains home to a diverse and robust energy sector that provides reliable and affordable energy to power their homes, cars and businesses.”
The Senate Republicans have all signed a letter stating their position.
