Holtec International says it’s making great headway in its effort to reopen the Palisades nuclear power plant in Van Buren County.
Holtec says as part of the early stages of the project, it’s reestablished critical employees at the facility, revitalized training programs, procured plant systems and components, and firmed up funding streams as it works its way through the regulatory process.
More than 360 Holtec associates are now employed at the plant, an increase of nearly 150 since the re-start program began. Holtec says it’s also reached a labor agreement with 15 trade unions that are supporting the project.
The company has completed the reconstitution of the plant’s Control Room Simulator and restoration of operator training program, and the Training Building, which had been mothballed for future demolition, is now active again.
Holtec says equipment is now being refurbished and it’s working with the NRC toward a license renewal for the Covert Township plant.
Finally, the company says it’s making progress on the two small modular reactors it plans to add to the site, in addition to its existing reactor. Holtec says preliminary siting activities are underway with the filing of the Construction Permit Application for the two reactors targeted for 2026.
