A 48-year-old man from Berrien Springs is in the hospital after a one-car accident in Lawrence Township overnight.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s office reports that just before 2 AM Thursday, deputies were dispatched for an unknown crash in the 48000 block of Red Arrow Highway in Lawrence Township.

A caller reported a car was off the road in some trees with its lights on. When deputies arrived, they located the vehicle which was occupied solely by the driver. The driver was unresponsive and deputies were initially unable to extricate him from the vehicle. The Lawrence Fire Department assisted in extricating the driver who remained unresponsive and was transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for severe injuries sustained during the crash.

Deputies say it appears the vehicle was traveling on Red Arrow Highway when it went off of the road, striking a large tree initially and then continuing on into the woods and striking an additional tree.

The incident remains under investigation and anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
