Benton Harbor Area Schools is launching a new diverse classroom libraries project on Monday.
District student support services chief Paul Korson tells us thanks to a grant from the Michigan Department of Education and local funds, Benton Harbor Area Schools is bringing in a wide array of books that reflect a broad spectrum of experiences and backgrounds to better appeal to students.
“We have over 3,000 books that have already arrived, and we still have a couple more boxes on their way,” Korson said. “So, it’s a large number of books being infused into our classrooms and getting within hand reach of our students.”
This comes after months of planning on how to improve the reading skills of students. Korson says the kids are looking forward to their new libraries.
“We’ve had all sorts of different input throughout the last year planning for this and needing teachers to help select books and help be part of the project as well as our students as well. So, I think there’s a large amount of love and excitement about it.”
Korson says books reflecting diverse characters and writers have been purchased and will be installed Monday. State education officials and district representatives will be on hand for the unveiling.
