Now in its new location at 133 West Main in Benton Harbor is the Corewell Health Center for Wellness, formerly known as the Center for Better Health and Wellness.
Corewell Director of Population Health Nicki Britten tells us the office was first opened in 2020 to provide more health services to Benton Harbor residents during the pandemic. However, when grant funds to operate the facility ran out, the decision was made to keep it open. Britten says it’s offered much to Benton Harbor residents.
“They can see evidence that Corwell Health is listening to them and what they’re saying they want and need from us,” Britten said. “Really, the center has been the first major investment of the health system within the city of Benton Harbor in a number of years.”
Britten says the community had been asking for that, and Corewell responded.
The facility on West Main has offered health screenings, hypertension care, mental health counseling and maternal infant health programming. With 20 times more space in the new building, even more can be offered.
“I think the most important thing is we had to rotate different types of services in and out of the center on different days of the week when we were in our old location. Now we’ve got everything in place, so we’ve got plenty of space to be able to have multiple clients in at the same time.”
Britten says key new additions include a kitchen for nutrition services, education space, and room for physical education.
The new building is just across the street from the old building, so it shouldn’t be hard to find. It was sold to Corewell by Whirlpool for a token price.
