Berrien County Treasurer Shelly Weich will hold some meetings around the county in the coming weeks to tell people about the property tax payment plans offered by her office.
Weich tells us when a property owner is in danger of foreclosure due to unpaid taxes, she will work with them to arrange monthly payments to get back on track. She says it makes more sense for her office.
“It still keeps tax money coming in, it beats foreclosing on the property, and it keeps the people in their homes,” Weich said.
Around 600 property owners in Berrien County are currently on payment plans. Weich says what each payment plan looks like depends on the situation.
“I try to work with their financial situation. I want it doable for them just so they can continue making the monthly payment so they don’t get into a worse situation than they’re already in.”
Weich has been touring the county this year, holding workshops in different communities so people can come and meet with her about payment plans.
The next event will be at the Niles Township Hall on March 13. Weich will then be at the Benton Township Hall on March 20, and Buchanan City Hall on March 27. All events are from 1 to 3 p.m.
Everyone’s welcome to stop by.
